Review of GPU upgrade (from RX 590 to GTX 4060)

Hello,

So, I want to change my GPU, my RX 590 OC has been causing problems since I bought it 4 years ago (BSOD or complete freezes as soon as games put a little pressure on it). I tried returning it for repair but it wasn't very conclusive, my only solution has been to underclock it all this time. Believe me, I searched for a long time to get it to work normally, but it's getting worse and worse. The last time I changed the thermal paste, I saw a flaw appear on the chip... And now it crashes even on games that shouldn't be demanding. It even made me lose my save in Doom and Outer Wilds due to crashes. Whaaaat indignity! It's goodbye!

I have a Ryzen 7 2700X CPU (a bit old but I can't afford to change both CPU and GPU, especially since it still does the job). I'm leaning towards a Gainward GeForce RTX 4060 Python II 8 GB to switch to the green side of the brand (found it for €270 at Top Achat). I have two monitors (one at 1440p 165Hz and a second one at 1080p 60Hz). Would this GPU be suitable, even if it's not perfectly optimized with my old CPU?

I'm a bit hesitant to stay on the AMD side for the GPU, I want to take advantage of Nvidia's RTX and DLSS technologies. But who knows, if you manage to convince me to go for a 7060 or higher.

    Hello,

    I'm having a bit of trouble following where you want to go with all these details you're providing. However, if you were using an RX590, it would be beneficial to upgrade to an RTX4060. If you have the means, you might as well consider upgrading to a Ryzen5000 at the same time, as the Ryzen5000 is compatible with your motherboard with a BIOS update. See here

      Hello, thank you for your response.

      I have provided all my configuration (copied/pasted from cloud drivers) to avoid responses like "what configuration do you have?".

      As I mentioned, for the moment I can't afford to get a GPU and CPU. Having tested with a friend's GPU, I know that my CPU is not at fault in my situation. If I switch to a 4060, I'm aware that I will have a bottleneck related to my CPU, but it will still be better than my current issues that prevent me from enjoying my games in a stable manner.

      (Oh, and the description of my 590 and its issues is because I wanted to vent a bit about it, it's been bothering me for a long time. Also, if a specialist in this kind of problem comes by, it might enrich the discussion.)

        If you used a diagnostic utility, posting everything by copy-paste may be counterproductive because the essentials (CPU, motherboard, GPU, RAM, power supply, etc.) will be drowned in a sea of unnecessary details to solve the issue.

        When I say copy/paste, I obviously edited the thing. I kept what seemed important to me. Maybe too much, I admit, but you never quite know in advance what people responding on this forum will need.

        A keen eye will see that I put my setup at the end of the message and will look for the necessary information if needed.

    Not sure that your Ryzen 7 will bottleneck with a 4060... I don't think so.

    As for your RX 590, these cards are known for memory issues and excessive overheating. This can be verified by observing the hotspot with software like HWMONITOR; if it exceeds 98°, a crash is guaranteed.

    I know I’m going to make some people scream, but NVIDIA is more reliable and stable. Indeed, we see it in the gaming world, Steam for example, publishes interesting statistics on the graphics cards used by their subscribers, and NVIDIA occupies the top 10 places... AMD barely exists.

      It's a relief if my CPU isn't bottlenecking! At worst, I'll always be able to change it later.

      Yes, these 4 years with the 590 OC have been a real nightmare... I monitored it with HWmonitor, it would freeze at 85°C at my place (with a cruising temperature of 83°C, let's just say the crashes happened easily if it got a bit too hot at my place).

      I admit to being more on the AMD side ethically speaking, but I can't deny the fact that in terms of GPU, it's a mess. A friend lent me an Nvidia to help me out for a while, and I was rediscovering the pleasure of gaming without the stress of severe crashes. Not to mention the Nvidia technologies (DLSS and RTX) that are prioritized by development studios.

      I completely understand what you mean by "making some people scream," but to my great dismay, there's no denying that Nvidia is easier to manage.
