Unwanted pop-up on startup - Microsoft Edge

Hello,

I have been experiencing a problem for a while with Microsoft Edge.

When I start my computer, a blank Edge window opens on the site: seokitstore.com/redirect.php?source=eVPN_05_04_2023mega

For the past two days, a white window now opens at startup that is not clickable and that I can only close via the task manager.

Despite my attempts to repair Microsoft Edge, uninstall it (which is impossible), block pop-ups through the browser, nothing works.

I installed Malwarebytes, but nothing works. My antivirus does not detect any anomalies.

I have never used Microsoft Edge as I am on another browser, and I don't understand why this site is bothering me so much.

Thank you in advance

    Hello,

The behavior you're describing seems like adware or a PUP (potentially unwanted program) that could be embedded in your system, even if your antivirus and Malwarebytes haven't detected it.

Try using another software like AdwCleaner (which is also developed by Malwarebytes). It's a lightweight tool specialized in removing adware and PUPs.

      Thank you for your response.

I just used AdwCleaner, but it doesn't detect anything either.

    Hello,

If you want to analyze with RegRun Reanimator

    https://greatis.com/security/reanimator.html

Click on Fix Problems and then Fix Malware Issues

Be careful, it's important to sort well, through deductions or Internet research and/or VirusTotal analyses* to remove only viruses or unnecessary items, it detects possibly active items, sometimes good, sometimes bad (when there are any).

You need to look at the tabs at the top for the different types of items seen.

It shows details like types, names, and locations of files etc., which often serve as concrete clues.

Whether marked in red (often bad), yellow, blue, or green, it's the user who must judge the relevance of what it detects.

Check the items to delete and not the others and click on the red button, in all sections where there are items to delete, then go to Finish! and click the Restart is Required button.

If it doesn't detect enough, use the Filter Set button or the Inspection Mode to see everything, but double your caution on what you delete.

Or by closing the first Reanimator window with the X at the top right, and the Reanimator tab > Anti Spyware Full Check...

    Or On-Line Multi-Antivirus Scan

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The VirusTotal Uploader program *Download the App here*

    https://docs.virustotal.com/docs/desktop-apps

For (A file) > Right click > Send to > VirusTotal

(Show hidden files if needed, in View > Options > View)

To get live results online of the file analysis by about sixty antivirus engines, in addition to the Details tab to see if the file is signed and verified or not etc.

You can use the Reupload option to obtain a new analysis of the file if it is a recent file that has been little analyzed.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then if you want to inspect and clean up unnecessary processes at startup with Autoruns and Services.msc

Download Autoruns here, extract everything into a new folder anywhere, and run it as an administrator.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns

If error messages, try version 13.98

    https://filehippo.com/fr/download_autoruns/13.98/

Look at all the details, do some research.

In the "Logon" and "Scheduled Tasks" tabs, disable or delete unnecessary third-party items not from Microsoft or important Windows ones from automatic startup, either by unchecking them, or by right-clicking > Delete.

Look at the "Services" tab, but do not disable them if they are sometimes useful, it's better to set them to "Manual" (On demand) with Windows services.msc, by right-clicking the Start button > Run: services.msc

With Autoruns, we have the list of Non-Windows services, so it helps.

The changes will take effect after restarting Windows.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then also execute this .reg file

      Hello,

Thank you for your solutions, the RegRun Reanimator software one seems to have finally worked!

I rebooted and the window no longer opens, phew!

I looked again in Edge's history to see if the site was still opening in the background, but not at all.

I hope this time it's finally over, thank you very much! :)

If repair and uninstallation do not work normally, try doing it via PowerShell:

Type powershell in the Start menu search and open it as an administrator.

Run the following command to uninstall Edge.

    Get-AppxPackage *MicrosoftEdge* | Remove-AppxPackage

    After that, restart your PC.
