Hello,

I am reaching out to you because I cannot delete software shortcuts on my desktop.

  1. I installed two software programs that generated two shortcuts on my desktop
  2. Whether with the keyboard, right-click, or dragging to the trash, I cannot delete them. When I try, there is no reaction from the PC, not even an error message
  3. I tried to move them to a folder and I get an error message: "insufficient memory to complete this operation"
  4. I attempted to redo all these actions by switching my account to admin, no change
  5. I uninstalled and then reinstalled, the old shortcut is still there, and now I have a 3rd one that I cannot delete T_T

Please help

    Hello,

What shortcuts are these, from a cloud service?

Do you have an antivirus that could be causing the PC to bug?

If you want to analyze and try to remove these shortcuts (In the Startup Programs section) and perhaps find and remove malware with RegRun Reanimator.

    https://greatis.com/security/reanimator.html

Click on Fix Problems and then Fix Malware Issues.

Be careful, it's important to thoroughly sort through, by deduction or online research and/or VirusTotal analyses* to only remove viruses or useless items because it detects everything, good or bad, important or not; this is not an antivirus, but a heuristic analysis tool that allows you to see details on potentially active items, sometimes good, sometimes bad.

You need to look at the tabs at the top for different types of items seen.

It shows details like types, names, and locations of files, etc., which serve as often concrete hints.

Whether marked in red (often bad), yellow, blue, or green, it's up to the user to judge the relevance of what it detects.

Check the items to delete and not the others, then click the red button in all sections where there are items to delete, then go to Finish! and click the Restart is Required button.

If it doesn't detect enough, use the Filter Set button or Inspection Mode to see everything, but exercise extreme caution regarding what you delete.

    Or Online Multi-Antivirus Scan

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The VirusTotal Uploader program *Download the App here*

    https://docs.virustotal.com/docs/desktop-apps

    For (A file) > Right-click > Send to > VirusTotal

(Display hidden files if necessary, in View > Options > View)

To get live online results of the file analysis by about sixty antivirus engines, plus the Details tab to see if the file is signed and verified or not, etc.

You can use the Reupload option to get a new analysis of the file in case of a recent file that has been poorly analyzed.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inspect and clean up unnecessary startup processes with Autoruns and Services.msc

Download Autoruns here, extract everything into a new folder anywhere, and run it as an administrator.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns

Look at all the details, conduct research.

In the "Logon" and "Scheduled Tasks" tabs, disable or remove unnecessary third-party items not from Microsoft or important Windows ones from automatic startup, either by unchecking them or by right-clicking > Delete.

Check the "Services" tab, but do not disable them if sometimes useful; it’s better to set them to "Manual" mode (On demand) using Windows services.msc, by right-clicking on the Start button > Run: services.msc

With Autoruns, you get a list of Non-Windows services, which is helpful.

Changes will take effect upon restarting Windows.

      Hello,

The situation is probably not related to the nature of the shortcut but to the fact that the PC's memory is crashed for one reason or another, preventing this action, whether it is too many legitimate processes open at the same time, software whose execution crashes the PC, a virus...

I would start, if the PC allows it, by turning it off and on again to see what happens.

        Hello Brucine :)

I edited my message to check for viruses.

I will scan as soon as possible, but take my time.

I will then use PowerShell (As Administrator)

        Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

        Followed by

        sfc /scannow

Note: we haven't talked about or tried RSTRUI which can sometimes be useful.

If it's a second account that's bugging and not the main admin account, we can delete it and create a new one from the Admin account.

Thank you for your response, Fabul.

The PC was formatted last week, so there's little risk of viruses. I followed your recommendations and found nothing.

The same goes for the startup processes, nothing.

I don't have the option to restore because there is no backup; I was planning to make one soon.

You can click on Inspection Mode after an unsuccessful standard analysis.

The shortcuts are in the Startup Programs tab > Subsection :
        Windows Shell User Shortcuts

If they’re not there, I wonder why.

What version of Windows is it? Win10 22H2 or Win11 23H2?

Press the Windows key + R (Run): WINVER
