Hello, I am experiencing the same issue, my Lenovo Thinkbook displays "check media fail" because before that I performed the "wipe data" function using the "single pass zeros". The PC shows a boot error, something like that; I understand that the PC does not detect the hard drive to start. I am also not sure which version of Windows it is. Thank you for your help.

    You're having the same issue as someone else; you say your OS is Windows 8 but then you don't know...

    If you have, as I understand, erased your disk, it is normal that it doesn't boot until a new OS is installed on it.

    Sorry, I don't know anything about this at all, I just know that I performed the "wipe data" by selecting "single pass zeros" and now it says "default boot device missing or boot failed. Insert recovery media and hit any key.." and then it shows "please select boot device" with only one option "EFI PXE Network" along with some numbers and letters.

    You're talking about an OS, what is that? Can I reinstall it by myself or do I need an external hard drive or something like that? Thank you very much.

      You marked your question as resolved when it is not?

      For a reason that is yours, you performed a total disk wipe with sector re-registration to prevent recovery, the operation obeyed and erased everything including the operating system.

      A computer obviously cannot boot from a blank disk without an operating system, the BIOS goes back to square one on startup by offering the only alternative (which you don't have), deployment of Windows from a network source.

      There is no other solution than to reinstall Windows from a CD or a corresponding version installation USB drive, done of course under these conditions from another PC if one is not already at hand; the programs and data that were on the disk before are lost unless there was an external backup.

      Nope: by definition, erasing the disk by rewriting over it is a process that only serves to prevent recovery when selling the PC (even when that’s not the case, it’s rare that after a simple format you can recover 100%).

      This should serve as a lesson for the future: the first thing you should do on a PC is to make sure you have a working installation media and a backup of your data on an external drive (or Cloud).
