Footer note issue spanning two pages
Ors -
Hello,
I have a problem with the footnotes. I'm in the process of finishing my thesis, and I have an issue with some footnotes.
I see that you have made videos on this subject. Unfortunately, in my document, I have a problem with 3 footnotes. The footnote appears on 2 different pages while leaving a large space on the first page.
Basically: note 12 starts at the bottom of page 16 and continues on page 17, but there is a large space below note 12 on page 16. And I don’t know how to solve this problem. I've been trying to find a solution for a week, to no avail. I’ve searched online (videos, forums, Microsoft help...) to find the solution. I’m losing hope. I have to submit my thesis and it's the only problem I have left to solve. COULD YOU PLEASE HELP ME?
I’m panicking at the thought of having to submit my thesis with this error.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for your response

Hello,
Could you please provide us with a small excerpt from the file, specifically the two pages containing the notes?
To do this, make a copy of the text and paste it into a new file that has exactly the same layout.

The screenshot (which I can't see) won't provide anything, we trust you on your word. We need a piece of the file as I asked you.
You can put it here:

Hello,
I advise you to check these steps first:
- Check the length of your footnote: Make sure that the footnote in question is not excessively long. If it is very long, try to shorten it if possible. Footnotes are generally meant to be concise.
- Check the layout settings: Ensure that your margins and layout settings are correct. Too wide margins can sometimes cause layout issues with footnotes.
- Use a section break: Try inserting a section break after the footnote, just before the start of the next page. This can help separate the footnote from the next page.
- Check the footnote layout options: In some word processing software, you can adjust the layout options specific to footnotes. Make sure these options are correctly configured.
- Try deleting and reinserting the footnote: Sometimes, simply deleting and reinserting the footnote can resolve layout issues.
- Use columns: If your document is formatted in columns, make sure the footnote is properly aligned with the appropriate column.
Hoping you will find the solution, otherwise, you need to try something else.
Hello Bruno,
I've done at least 10 times everything you suggest, unfortunately nothing works. There are 780 footnotes in my document and only 3 are problematic. As for the length of the note, there are much longer notes than those but they don't cause any issues.
I went into "Paragraph" and "break" to check and uncheck all the options, nothing resolves the problem.
Hello again,
Don't despair; there must be a solution.
I understand that this can be frustrating. In this case, the problem might be a bit more complex. Here are a few other suggestions you could try:
Check the advanced formatting settings: Some word processing software offers advanced formatting options for footnotes. Make sure to check these options to see if there's anything that could affect the layout of the footnotes.
Reset the layout settings: Sometimes, the layout settings can become corrupted. You could try resetting the default layout settings to see if that resolves the issue.
Use another method for placing footnotes: For example, if you are using automatic footnotes, try converting them to endnotes or vice versa to see if that makes any difference.
Try another word processing software: If possible, try opening your document in another word processing software to see if the problem persists. Sometimes, another software can handle layouts differently and resolve the issue. The ODT format is compatible with many other word processors.
Otherwise, contact the software's technical support directly. I don't see any other alternative.
Good luck.
Hello Bruno,
I had already tried to copy my thesis to a new document, but now the rest of the document is completely disorganized, and it's 150 pages long. I completely lose the formatting I had. This means I have to redo the formatting of 150 pages with different sections... I'm feeling really down :'(
