Command and Conquer: Generals on W11

Hello,
I just reinstalled an old game that I used to enjoy playing, which is C&C Generals and Zero Hour, but the problem is that since we are in 2024 and PCs are more powerful than XP and Vista, the game no longer works. The installation goes fine, but nothing happens when I launch the game (I'm on Windows 11).
I have already tried setting it to an older version (XP Service Pack 3), even with XP Service Pack 2, and checking "Run as Administrator," but nothing works.
Maybe you have a solution so I can start playing this great game again, and perhaps the solution will help others as well.
Thank you in advance.

Hello,
If I understood correctly, you tried to launch these games in XP compatibility mode and it doesn’t work.
If that’s the case, it’s probably because the PC is too new, although I’m wary of W11, crappy OS...
In any case, I haven’t found any fix for these games.
One suggestion: Electronic Arts, a remastered version of C&S used to be there and could work on W11 but it seems it’s no longer available (still according to Reddit). ???
Best regards

There’s that for W10
But I don’t know if it works on that lousy W11
Hi
The Spiralio solution is the only one that can work.
You need to check with the game launchers, Steam, EA games, Ubi, etc.
At EA, there is indeed C&C: Command & Conquer Remastered - EA Official Site which is available either on Steam or the EA app. (it's €6.99 on Steam)

The AI that loves challenges is here!
There are several ways to solve compatibility issues between older games and Windows 11. Here are some steps to follow:
1. Use the Windows 11 compatibility mode to force the game to run in an older environment. To do this, right-click on the game's executable, select "Properties," then "Compatibility." Make sure to choose a version of Windows that you know the game worked well on.
2. If the game still doesn't work, you may need to install unofficial patches. Many online gaming communities create these patches to help keep older games alive on new systems. You can search online for specific patches for Command & Conquer: Generals.
3. Finally, a surefire way to play older games is to install a virtual machine running an older version of Windows. This is a more complex solution, but it has the advantage of working with almost all games.
Note that if your game is very old, it may simply not work on newer systems, no matter what method you use.
Hello, Mr. Bobot!
The AI is not quite there yet ;)
1) See the comment from brucine at #2
"there is no compatibility mode for XP under Windows 11, which only goes back to Vista."
The games in question worked under XP, not beyond.
2) No fixes for these games, and I've searched hard... American forums & Co.
3) A virtual machine would probably do the trick, but why make things complicated when you can keep it simple?
See you later
Hello!!
I'm reaching out to let you know that I've found the solution to the problem.
I'm going to explain it here since I'm not like some people who ask for information because they're stuck and once they find the solution, they don't share it (selfish).
I found the solution with this tutorial.

And it works very well for me.
So problem solved.
Thanks to those who helped me. flo88; brucine; spirallo;

So, W11 can indeed run applications designed for XP...
Unless considering the Nirsoft utility, I haven't tested it; this is not what the screenshot shows in this link, nor is it what I commented in <2> after also testing several executables taken at random, and unless I have a particular version of Windows 11: I do not have, unlike what happens under Windows 10, the choice of XP.
And this obviously does not prevent, depending on how they are written and outside of compatibility mode, certain applications designed for XP and even for 2000 or Win9X from working under Windows 11; I have a few of those in this case.
Hello,
Aside from tweaks specific to games that I don't understand, there is no XP compatibility mode under Windows 11, which only goes back to Vista.
If the game in question does not work in Vista compatibility mode, there is really no other solution than to dig out an XP computer from your attic or a flea market, or to try to run it on your current PC in a virtual XP machine.
