Hello,

To find out all the licenses for the software installed on my 5 laptops running Windows 10 Pro 64, I downloaded:

ProduKey for PC free

with the following link:

https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/utilitaires/25159-produkey/

And as usual before launching a program or opening attachments received by email, I first test them for security with:

VirusTotal via the following link:

https://www.virustotal.com/gui/home/upload

And the test result for ProduKey really surprised me because it reported 31 alerts as follows:

"31 security vendors and no sandboxes flagged this file as malicious"

What do you think? Because this seems really strange to me, but I don't want to know the licenses of the installed software and contaminate my five PCs!

Hello @Walti55 StatutMembre.

The problem with people using VirusTotal is that they don't know how to interpret the results and often panic for no reason. Given the function of this software, there is nothing unusual in the VT results; you can use this software without worry.

Hello,

Produkey indeed shows a false positive with almost all antivirus programs.

Moreover, it is outdated as it does not display all Windows 10 licenses, none for Windows 11, and none for Office after 2010.
https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html

On my Windows 11/Office 2019 installation, it gives a nonsensical result with a unique key for Internet Explorer (sic) and Windows 10 Home (re sic, which doesn't exist).

Hello @bazfile StatutModérateur, Contributeur sécurité

1. According to your response, what does it mean that everyone who uses VirusTotal doesn't know how to interpret the results and often panics for no reason?

2. Simply show us that Produkey is not a malicious file as VirusTotal informs us!

These requests are made to you seriously because brucine also informs us that Produkey indeed gives a false positive with almost all antivirus programs.

Simply show us that Produkey is not malicious

Don't expect me to give you a lecture; that's not my style.

My previous response is clear; everything is stated in it. It comes from the nature and function of this software, and the VT report is also very clear. Read the wording of the detections more carefully. Now, if you don't believe me, don't use this software.

Hello,

This comes from NirSoft, which is a rather reliable company.

Good evening fabul,

Just so you know, I downloaded ProduKey from NirSoft

Then I tested it with VirusTotal and my paid Avast Premium license, and here are the results obtained, namely:

                                                   +

What do you think of these bad results?

Can we really advise " tutti quanti " to use " free ProduKey " without contaminating their PCs ???

Rather than a screenshot, you can present a VirusTotal link

https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/696eb50e02956b811db0373fc1267d7d79cdf411a570bc7b7a4505116c5bcfcd/detection/f-696eb50e02956b811db0373fc1267d7d79cdf411a570bc7b7a4505116c5bcfcd-1703964164

I ran it on my PC, it's not a virus.

I sometimes use tools that have even more detections, and with names that look even meaner, but it is what it is.

And I don't use antivirus, it detects false positives more than anything else when you're careful, and has other script and network blockers, etc.

fabul,

Your responses about the security of our PCs and those of our financially comfortable clients are making us laugh out loud, because on one hand you criticize us for including screenshots in our questions, while this is exactly what we need to do to present our questions and comments in the CERN meetings to be well understood by all the different professions present at CERN and just next door at Geneva airport.

Moreover, you claim that you have run ProduKey on your PC and that it is not a virus . . .

. . . adding that you do NOT use Anti-Virus . . .

In conclusion, you have therefore completely disabled Windows Defender, which is normal for you alone without others, to never have any viruses, malware, ransomware, or spyware on any of your PCs, . . . which is really exceptional!

====> You absolutely need to share your experiences and solutions on TV, because instead of paying an annual license for Kaspersky, McAfee . . . Avast ;

- well millions of viewers would prefer to pay you at least 10 € each annually, which would be really profitable for you . . . to buy an Anti-Virus that also combats programmed obsolescence on PCs, as Avast Premium does excellently on one of my PCs purchased in August 2012 (2012), which functions like the engine - processor of a FERRARI F1.

fabul, we wish you all the best and thank you for your valuable and applicable responses that you have given us on other questions and issues now resolved thanks to you.

The semi-aggressive tone is not very nice, especially since the people posting here are volunteers. Bazfile is a very competent person who has knowledge unlike you; he knows what he is talking about, so when he tells you that there is no problem, there isn't.

The best antivirus is common sense; for more than 20 years of using a computer, I have never been infected.

Hello,

Discouraging you from answering your questions, we're back to being off-topic; it's unclear how CERN, financial ease, or planned obsolescence relate to the matter.

In essence, apart from Windows Defender, you're not obliged to pay for an antivirus; for instance, Comodo has a free version... of which I've disabled the antivirus.

It is a constant that viruses are almost systematically the result of the user even when using an antivirus (the security section of this forum bears witness to this), and consequently, an antivirus is of no use even if it is more updated than a "new" virus if that user has a healthy behavior. Not to mention that even if a malicious executable were installed, it would most often be intercepted by the firewall components and Defense of the functional security software.

It is also a constant, despite false positives and as previously mentioned, that Nirsoft is a reliable publisher.

In this case, Produkey is not considered a virus due to malicious code but solely because of its purpose: enumerating license codes with the possible intention of using them for illegitimate purposes.

Everything having been said and repeated, I am closing this post that is going in circles, as apart from saying and repeating that this software is safe, I don't know what else could be said.

Have a good day everyone.
