Hello,

Having received my new PC running W11 today, I had to install the "scanner" app from Microsoft since the app that came with my scanner worked on W10 but crashes on W11...

This "scanner" app works, but what is the name of the executable so that I can create a shortcut on the desktop?

Thank you

P.S.: if you have any equivalent freeware applications, I’m interested...

Hello, since this is a Microsoft Store application, the procedure to create a shortcut on the desktop is different from a simple executable.

Open the start menu -> Click on "All apps" -> Find the Scanner app and drag it to the desktop.

Well, I finally got the solution, which I’m copying here because it might help others who encounter the same problem.

In my case, it is impossible to create a shortcut on the desktop by right-clicking when finding the application from the Windows Start Menu: the option is simply not present.

The solution is to open the folder containing the Windows applications, because from this location you can do "right-click - create a shortcut".

To do this, type "shell: appsfolder" ---> a folder opens with all the applications (including those from the Store like Scanner), ---> right-click / create shortcut.

Then you get a message saying that you can't create a shortcut in this folder (normal since it's already there), but the message offers to create it on the Desktop.

You respond "yes," and that's it! Issue resolved.

P.S.: why change the usual principle that everyone knows? You’ll have to ask the Nobel Prize winners at M$...

Hello.

How do you expect someone to give you a precise answer if you don't specify which scanner you're talking about.

Go to the manufacturer's website for your scanner; if your scanner isn't too old, you'll find a compatible Windows 11 application.

Microsoft offers a "Windows Scanner" app available for download from the Microsoft Store.

I know, but there is also this question:

P.S.: if you have any equivalent freeware apps, I'm interested...

Hence my response.

Oh sorry, Microsoft's app is very basic but indeed it's complicated to find better without knowing the scanner.

Sorry gentlemen, but the scanner model has absolutely nothing to do with my question!

My question is, what is the name of the ".exe" for the Microsoft application, which is obviously independent of the scanner model...

@ Jean20B: I tried but it doesn't work: if I try to drag it onto the Desktop, nothing happens... Maybe under W11 it needs to be done differently??

In the meantime, I remembered that I had a license for "VueScan," probably the best scanning app, which is a workaround, but I would still like to know the name of the Microsoft app...

Thank you,

Hello,

I don't use it, I use a dedicated program.

If there is indeed a Microsoft Store application, it has created a dedicated folder in the WindowsApps folder of Programs where the exe is located.

If the shortcut is already in the Start menu applications, if I right-click and create a shortcut, I will be thrown out and the menu will automatically suggest creating it on the desktop.

Here’s how I created the shortcut with Windows 11:

You need to go through the "All apps" button in the start menu (curiously, it doesn’t work when searching for the app with the search bar)

Then, I scroll down to Scanner and hold the left click to drag the app to the desktop and create a shortcut.

The executable is probably somewhere in the WindowsApps folder, but I don’t have access to it.

Hello,

Indeed, and as mentioned by several speakers, I see no reason why it shouldn't be done by left or right click.

Well, the app is indeed in the Start menu, but a right-click doesn't show "create shortcut", so I can't even be tossed out!

And it's impossible to see the contents of the Windowsapp folder for security reasons!

Man, the transition to W11 is annoying me:

Oh, strange about the shortcut, I have that at home (not in a tile, in the start menu) and can't you also right-click, drag without releasing to the desktop then drop, to create the shortcuts here?

Regarding the WindowsApps folder, I can access it without any problem, but I can't remember after which unintended tweak (administrator account, UAC minimized to the minimum, showing hidden and system files and folders, Windows Defender is disabled in favor of third-party software and most of the actions in the security center, application control and so on, disabled).

If you don't want to spend your life searching, the simplest thing is to change the owner, see there, Part 1, at the very bottom:

yclick is right regarding Windows 10 (WFS: Windows Fax and Scan) but it was software, not an application; the name may be retained, but probably not the location.
