No Internet connection with Vista

Hello,

I have a problem: I can't connect with any of the browsers available, Firefox or Internet Explorer, I receive an error message saying that I'm not connected to the internet.

In the cmd prompt, I checked that the internet connection is okay with an ipconfig command that returns the details of the wifi connection. I can also ping any site like google.fr or orange.fr, showing that the wifi connection is fine, including the DNS. I disabled the Windows firewall and also the Windows Defender antivirus, which is no longer supported on this version of Windows.
Question: do you have any ideas on where to look to resolve this connection issue affecting both internet browsers, proxy, dns, or anything else?

Hello,

If the IP is correct, it might just be the browser.

For internet, IE on Vista is no longer usable; try the latest version of Firefox compatible with XP and Vista, ESR 52.9, which, while not offering all current features, is still usable on many sites (but not all): http://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/52.9.0esr/win32-sha1/fr/ download the .exe, transfer it via USB key to the PC and run it. You may need to uninstall the old version of Firefox first.

Mypal 32-bit also works on XP and Vista https://www.mypal-browser.org/download.html

Hello,

So it's not the connection that's inoperative but the browser.

Older versions of Internet Explorer no longer work at all; under XP it was IE6 by default, we can migrate to IE8, which is no better, and we are going to be kicked off many sites because they no longer support IE or the security certificates have not been updated.

Under Windows 7, Firefox is only supported up to version 115, anything installed later will not work, and anything earlier will migrate whether we start from standard Firefox or Firefox ESR 52.9 to Firefox ESR 115.

Under XP, we will be stuck with ESR 52.9.

The bottom line is that we need to download Firefox ESR 52.9 on another PC (then USB key), choose Win 32 or 64 as appropriate, then fr.

Some suggest other alternatives, for example Pale Moon, but in any case, it's not guaranteed that all sites will support it.

Hello again,

I did more research to understand the problem, I created a clean admin account to see if my default admin account had any specific setups that could create a problem, disabled the firewall, and managed to partially isolate the issue,

Firefox works well

Internet Explorer, on the other hand, has a behavior that I still don't understand, the Bing search plugin is able to search for any keywords and display the list of results, but as soon as I click on a link in the results page, I get an error message saying that I am not connected to the internet…
I will do more research to understand

You have been told, depending on the version, what to think about IE's behavior.

Either it doesn't work at all anymore, or some sites no longer support IE because the online scripts are no longer compatible either with IE, or with Vista, or there are no security certificates: you have to accept it, IE still works in a more or less shaky way up to Windows 7 but is dead, Microsoft has killed it.

I hadn't seen the latest replies, I'm going to install the recommended version of Firefox, IE is no longer supported on Vista anyway.

Thank you for your replies.
