Hello,

I am contacting you because I am unable to use the "Insert Table of References" function in Word (Office365). The tab remains grayed out and inactive. How can I activate it?

Thank you in advance for your help.

It is possible that the "Insert Table of References" function is disabled or hidden in the toolbar customization options. To activate it, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click on the top toolbar of Word.
  2. Select "Customize Toolbar".
  3. In the "Commands" tab, select "References" from the "Categories" dropdown list.
  4. Drag the "Table of Contents and Index" or "Table of Illustrations" icon onto the top toolbar.

If this does not resolve the issue, it may be that the feature is not available for the current document. Ensure your document contains appropriate bookmarks and captions for the references you wish to include in the table of references. If this still does not resolve the problem, try repairing your Microsoft Office installation or contact Microsoft support for further assistance.

Thank you for these responses, but none of that works. The Microsoft technical support team also seems to have difficulty understanding my problem despite the screenshot I sent...

Hello,

I'm not sure if I have a solution to the problem, but at least I'm not doing a copy-paste from Chat GPT like in <1>.

The various causes mentioned are:

-protected document: remove this protection if you are the author

-use of old documents in .doc format instead of .docx: the .docx format is essential for references

-corruption of the Normal.dotm template: save it under any name like Old_Normal.dotm, Word will create a new one upon the next startup

-more general corruption of the Word installation or the registry: try repairing Office from its item in Control Panel-Programs or by reinstalling it over itself, or even completely uninstall Office using the Office uninstallation assistant https://support.microsoft.com/fr-fr/office/d%C3%A9sinstaller-office-d-un-pc-9dd49b83-264a-477a-8fcc-2fdf5dbf61d8 and then reinstall it.

There may be a specific problem if the target Word 365 document is online (OneDrive or equivalent) instead of being local; I don't understand that part.

I am using 2019 and not 365, but I'm not sure if, for the reference table to be available, you need to have entered at least one citation in the relevant text beforehand:

Thank you, but none of this works. I have the same problem on both my work PC and my personal PC...
