Install recent android on old tablet

Hello,
I have never rooted a phone or tablet, I'm more used to formatting PCs... but I have a very old Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet running Android 4.1.1, and I would hate to throw it away just because the software is outdated. It's in great condition, and I think maybe I could format it and install a recent compatible Android version...
On the internet, there's a whole jumble of things to download and click on, and I have a low to medium level of trust in these executables, the contents of which I don’t know. I don't want to ruin my PC in the process.
Is this within the reach of a newbie?
With a few preparation steps and trusted software, could I make it usable again?
If you have a "safe" protocol (like formatting the tablet/downloading the new version from a trusted site via PC/installing from PC), I would be willing to give it a try. It would be my contribution to avoiding waste on this planet :)
Thank you

Hello,
The other issue is the hardware limitation of such a tablet to accept such an Android version.
Reports claim that we could upgrade to Android 9, citing (as usual...) an xda procedure.
See here, at your own risk, knowing that you must not choose the wrong version or you might permanently brick the device.
