Opera uses a lot of memory

Hello,

For some time now, I've noticed that the Opera browser is using at least half, if not 80% to 90%, of my memory (considering I have a total of 8GB of memory).
Even with just one tab open, something basic like Google or Mail, I find that extremely high. Earlier, I had a YouTube video and Adobe Illustrator open, and Opera completely crashed.
I don't think this is normal for a "gaming" PC, especially since it runs quite a few games without any issues.

And I'm not sure I understand why 20 processes are coming from Opera when only one tab is open; that seems like a lot..?

I've already looked on other forums and I see that a lot of people have this issue, but I haven't really found a solution. I've also done several antivirus checks, but the software found nothing unusual.

Thank you for your help!

Hello,

I also advise uninstalling; I would try clearing the history, cookies, cache... which over time consumes power on your PC.

Thank you for your answers.
I uninstalled Opera with Revo Uninstaller and checked that no files related to Opera were left, but after reinstalling, the problem is still there, only one tab open and 63% of memory used...

I will continue to search and test solutions from other forums.

Hello,

The suggestion from Ozenyx, which I share, made me think of checking a few points:

- On one hand, I notice, without ever having worried about it since I don’t have the issues observed, that my version of Opera under W10 occupies 710 MB, but the memory usage percentage is only 29% (16 GB of RAM).

I find that the weight of Opera is indeed significant, but the 29% doesn’t represent Opera but the total of all launched software.

We should compare it to the weight of Chrome, which I haven't installed (and which uses the same engine).

We can extrapolate that with 8 GB, I would be around 60%, which is close to that of Nyxisa.

However, we must first convince ourselves that these 60 or 63% are the sum of the total memory usages.

I can testify that by opening Opera simultaneously, I went from 29% to then Edge (170 MB), adding iTunes (86 MB) then Vivaldi (454 MB) then LibreOffice (163 MB), I "painfully" reach 35% memory usage.

The 710 MB of Opera weighs roughly a large third of the total and much more in percentage without knowing if my hundreds of favorites (not opened) are the cause.

By using the lightest of browsers (Edge here) to see how much memory it mobilizes, I can't do it since I am currently on Opera, which I would have to close.

In response to a point raised, I currently have 18 processes open under Opera, 10 under Vivaldi, and 6 under Edge. There must be a logical explanation but it shouldn't be a cause for concern.

I would conclude by saying that it doesn’t seem wise to scour the web looking for a solution that has already been released. While I believe there are forums (very few) as credible as CCM, when I see the number of visitors stating they come to us because they’ve browsed all sites and we are the only ones who must (not can) pull them out of the deadlock (which I don’t believe).

I would therefore advise you to choose a site, clearly present the tests carried out, and assess whether the responses help you progress;

We, the contributors, will be indebted to you for the solutions you choose to share.

Verification done, by opening only Edge, I am at 25% memory usage compared to 29% with only Opera open. Therefore, we need to look for another cause for the observed crashes. At least that's my opinion, but I am asking for others.

Hello,

I don't have a definitive solution to offer you, but I can tell you that I have used Opera on all successive versions of Windows since Windows 3.11 and also various Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Slackware, Puppy Linux, Debian) for about twenty years, without encountering the slightest malfunction, even having up to twenty tabs open, plus one or two windows, while occasionally browsing with Edge and Vivaldi also installed on my PC.

I would suggest the hypothesis of a deteriorated and persistent profile. I would try to uninstall Opera using Revo Uninstaller (free version) in advanced mode. The bookmarks are preserved (I'm not sure about the history). However, you can still save the bookmarks and recover them in a new installation.

I have already deleted traces of old installations of stubborn software by going into the %appdata% folder and manually deleting the folder (Opera in this case, as far as you're concerned).

I am not aware of the issues you are experiencing reported on CCM or other forums. However, I have previously browsed (not recently) the Opera forum where users generally received detailed responses.
