USB boot issue with Acer Aspire PC

Solved

Hello

For several years now, I've been repairing PCs for friends and other people.

The last PC that was brought to me is an Acer Aspire ES 17 ES1-732-P3S1 laptop with a dead hard drive, which I replaced with an SSD.

I’ve tried everywhere in the BIOS, but nothing works, it’s impossible to boot from USB (hard drive) or from the CD-ROM.

I did the F4 4 EFV F5 5 RGV F6 6 THN manipulation to unlock the hidden BIOS, but nothing works.

So if anyone has a solution, I’m interested.

Thank you

Hello

Yes, indeed, it's the F12 key for my case, but nothing for booting from USB or CD-ROM.

In fact, there are no options; it's empty in the boot menu.

Is the key properly formatted in FAT32?

Yes, it's strange but I believe that the "insydeH20 setup utility" BIOS has something to do with it; they've definitely locked it down.

Hello,

Probably a silly question, but is Secure Boot really disabled?

Guithard72 Posted messages 29 Status Membre 1

Good evening

Yes, the secure boot is indeed disabled

However, UEFI remains grayed out and I therefore do not have the option to set it to legacy, there is probably a solution but I'm stuck and there’s no solution on the internet, it's strange.

When you are in the BIOS in the configuration tab, do you see something like "SATA Controller Mode" where you can set it to AHCI?

If so, when the PC restarts, instead of going to the BIOS, open the command prompt and type bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal. If it says successfully, restart and access the BIOS and now change the SATA Controller to AHCI.

Restart, open the command prompt and type bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot. And normally, restart and UEFI will no longer be grayed out, and you will be able to switch to legacy mode.

Good evening,

Your idea doesn't seem to match his problem ;-)

Especially since he doesn't have Windows or a bootable USB to access a command prompt.

Good evening,

You don't install in legacy mode when you have a PC with UEFI.

In legacy mode, inherited ... it’s bringing down a recent and more efficient UEFI to a throttling of its features for backward compatibility with older and less efficient BIOS.

Since you are trying this way, I would say you probably didn’t create your USB key correctly.

How did you create it, using what?

Hello

To boot from USB, I use "WinToBootic"

and to burn the ISO image, I use "Express Burn"

Regarding WinToBootic, I've been using it for several years, and it has always booted correctly, and I've tried it on another PC, and it works fine.

At worst, even if my USB stick is messed up, the CD should work, right?

Hello, on some PCs like Acer, you need to tap the F12 key at startup to access the boot menu and choose the device you want to boot from. It might sometimes be a different key than F12.

It's not a key but an external hard drive and yes it has been formatted in FAT32.

Do you still have the ISO?

Remake your key (or hard drive) using Rufus and set the partition type to the GPT/UEFI couple.

https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/utilitaires/19615-rufus/

Try booting from the key again with secure boot simply disabled.

..............

I can’t stress this enough, on a UEFI you install for UEFI, not in legacy mode, which undermines the whole point of UEFI.

Okay, UEFI can sometimes make it trickier to boot from a key, but we find the right solution and keep the benefits of modernity.

No worries about the settings EXCEPT for your ISO.

Why are you putting a 32-bit Windows on this PC? You need a 64-bit.

Furthermore, it's an old version, 3 versions behind which is a year and a half out of date.

I don't see where the problem is.

Do you have a simple USB key to test?

Just to avoid being caught out by a USB power supply that’s too weak for the drive (or compatibility issues depending on its size)

The last test I just did with Rufus was with a USB stick "Size 16GB"

Have you tried using the Media Creation Tool to download Windows directly onto your USB stick?

If not, have you tried resetting all the BIOS settings to default, and checking that the USB ports are not locked, for example?

Guithard72 Posted messages 29 Status Membre 1 > Trezor

The Media Creation tool worked

I was able to reinstall Windows 10, not the one I wanted, but it got the job done and that's great; I was struggling for quite a while

Big thank you to you.

No, but I will try, you never know

I'm doing it on another USB key

Test by disabling one or both highlighted lines.

The idea is that these options being enabled "restrict" the boot on the partition and bootable drive created solely by Acer's recovery program.

(These are the manufacturer's recoveries, which might be an inconvenience since there are no more, searching for nothing, who knows ...)

finally from what I see, disable the D2D (that's enough), and/or play with choice none, restore from gpt recovery

It's nothing either

However, as I mentioned in the statement, I have a hidden BIOS

Try USB FDD or USB CD ROM first, you never know (not that normally, but oh well...)

For each attempt, make sure to save well, then turn off, then start with the key plugged in and tap F12 for the boot menu?

I'm still looking...

Well ... create a supervisor password

WARNING note it well, you will always need it on hand for future access/settings.

This should un-gray the uefi and legacy mode.

Personally, I'm sticking with a uefi installation, I will reactivate secure boot, try the key, if nothing, disable it again and retry.

(hoping that the password story will take effect on this side so that uefi is blue and secure boot with real effect. Because currently whether you activate or deactivate it, it doesn't seem to have an effect)

  4. Quittez le BIOS et enregistrez les modifications.

Who knows why ... It's done, all's well.

(seems to be an issue with secure boot, the Microsoft program "signs" the key and it went through)

You're welcome (that's the case :-) )
