Can the integrated graphics card be disabled?

Hello everyone.

When I start (or restart) my Acer laptop, the screen flickers (like a mirage) for about a second before going blank. There's nothing I can do after that. I have to force restart it, hoping it works. Safe mode doesn’t help at all. Sometimes it takes me an hour of non-stop attempts to be able to use my PC again, which is extremely stressful, and I'm never sure I'll succeed. So much so that I no longer turn it off. This prevents me from installing software (which requires a restart) or even transporting it. And it puts me in a state of insecurity.

After much research, I believe I have understood the problem. It seems to be due to my integrated graphics card, an Intel(r) HD Graphics 4600. My PC has been upgraded to Windows 10. However, this graphics card does not have a driver available for this system.

It turns out that my PC has a second graphics card, a Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M. If I understand correctly, it takes over if necessary (video, games, software, etc.). It seems to be working fine and has no driver issues.

So I thought, very well, why not make it the main graphics card? If it can do more, it can do less. But I couldn’t find an option anywhere to choose the primary graphics card, the one the computer would start with. If this option exists, please let me know where it is.

The only option I found is to disable the Intel card via the Device Manager. However, and this is my question, I’m afraid that this won’t be enough for the Nvidia card to become the primary one, and that nothing will light up at all when restarting the computer.

Is this fear justified? Can I disable my integrated Intel card without risk? Could this manipulation solve my problem, that is, make my computer start without a crashing screen, and on the first try?

Thank you very much for your answers.
Etienne

Hello.
Set your Nvidia Geforce GTX 960M as the default card https://www.techadvisor.fr/tutoriel/ordinateurs/changer-carte-graphique-3701717/

Thank you for this response. I have now set the "preferred graphics processor" in the global settings of the Nvidia control panel. However, the window implicitly prompts me to change something in the Windows settings as it states: "The Windows operating system now allows the selection of the graphics processor. Open the Windows graphics settings," but the settings it suggests opening do not allow me to do so. At this point, I am unsure whether the action taken in the Nvidia control panel (defining the preferred processor) is sufficient or not.

Thank you for this response. Unfortunately, the installation program is not working; I receive this message:
"The driver being installed has not been validated for this computer."

Haaa yes I hadn't thought of that, this problem is pretty common... :/ In that case, do you have the exact model of your PC? We should check the latest driver available on Acer's technical support and compare the version to yours. (If the problem comes from there ...)
