Public network or private network?

Hello,

I'm a bit lost. When I check the network settings, my PC suggests connecting to a public network because it’s safer... On the other hand, I read that public networks (when you're in a café or outside your home) where people have access to the same network are much more vulnerable. Can you clarify this for me? I don't know what to do anymore...
Thank you very much.
Best regards.

Hi,
actually, you are confusing the concept of public Wi-Fi (unsecured) and the concept of public network as discussed by Microsoft, which is a network shared among different users, but not necessarily Wi-Fi; it can also be an Ethernet network.
A private and secured Wi-Fi is like a private Ethernet network.
The concept of public network introduced by Microsoft, which indeed causes confusion because they often label a family network this way, is more related to Windows announcements of shared resources that occur on a private network and not on a public network, as well as the blocking of incoming connections by the firewall that exists on public networks (Microsoft) but not on private networks.
On an unsecured public Wi-Fi network, you can see a bit more of the content of some exchanges, but very little; however, you should not advertise network shares on a real public Wi-Fi network even more so than on a Microsoft public network.
In short,
we set the network to public by default to use it a bit like a Minitel, but we switch it to private as soon as we need to share things.
