Excel circular reference errors

Solved

Hello everyone,

I hope you had a great New Year's Eve and that Santa was generous. I'm already missing work, lol.

I work on Excel all day long and I keep getting this message. I went through the menus and disabled all error messages as far as I can tell, but this one keeps coming back. If needed, I can take some screenshots at work. How can I turn off this message? Thank you.

Good evening (and hi friend Yoyo)
to detect the error in a sheet:
  • select the entire sheet by clicking the box to the left of the column headers
  • formula tab / "error checking" section
  • click on the small arrow to the right of the line
  • click on the line "circular reference"

and Excel displays the cell in question
best regards

The quality of the answer mostly depends on the clarity of the question, thank you!

Hello, I just did your manip. It's great. I feel like I've solved the problem. I was shown a cell where there was a zero instead of a dash like the - in 6. A normal cell that doesn't affect the formula or anything else. I don't understand why the message then.
Anyway, I think it's done. I'm marking it as resolved. Thanks, everyone.

Good evening,

a circular reference is related, for example, to a formula entered in a cell that contains the same cell address in that formula.

To check:
Tab Formulas/Formula Auditing/Error Checking

Another solution, which should sometimes be used: in the options menu you should Enable iterative calculation

Remember to say "thank you" and mark as "resolved" when the issue is.

Hello.

So you understand that we cannot disable the message: we must remove the cause.

Hello,

I would add that if it's not intentional (which must be the case since you don't know what it is), there is an error in a formula that needs to be corrected.
We only enable iterative calculation if it's intentional and justified.

By continuously trying, we eventually succeed.
So the more it fails, the more chances we have that it works. (the Shadoks)
In addition to the thank you (yes, it happens!!!), remember to mark it as resolved. Thank you

Hello Eric, you know it's the work thing so I don't want to mess with it too much.
It's a bit annoying on a daily basis but oh well.
Thanks anyway.

All the more reason to correct it if it's for work.
An unintended circular reference returns a formula that gives nonsensical results. It’s better to delete it than to leave the impression that it’s a correct result.
If you are 100% sure that it’s justified, enable iterative calculation.
The best option is a correct formula, but hey, it’s up to each individual...
