21:9 Dual Screen Resolution

Hello,

To improve my remote work, I bought a new DELL monitor to complement my laptop screen.

This new monitor is a 34" with a resolution of 3440 x 1440 (21/9).
Ref: Dell 34 - S3422DWG

When I connect it to my work laptop (DELL) or my personal laptop (DELL), the maximum resolution is 1920x1080. The connection is made via HDMI (provided with the monitor).

I installed the monitor drivers, updated Intel & Dell drivers, but nothing changes. I contacted Dell's customer service. The technician told me it’s normal because laptops do not output a higher resolution. I found his response quite surprising. He was unpleasant; I felt like he wanted to get rid of me.

I searched for a solution for a long time, the only lead I found is to use a Display Port adapter (since my laptop only has HDMI). What do you think?

I hesitate to return my laptop because the stretched 16/9 effect is not practical. Moreover, I want to play on it in the near future; I want to enjoy the 21/9.

Thank you in advance for your help :)

Have a good day/evening

Good evening,

The resolution is indeed limited by the graphics card (or often what serves as one on a laptop).

Graphics cards (or, failing that, processor chipsets) generally support a slightly higher resolution via Display Port; in any case, an adapter is inexpensive to try, but it probably won't reach that level of resolution, more likely around 2500.

Finally, aside from the specific screen format, I struggle to see the point of having such a high resolution that one is unlikely to perceive the advantage with the naked eye.

Good evening Brucine,

Thank you for your response.

On both PCs, I have an Intel HD Graphics 620 card. According to Dell, the maximum resolution is 4096 x 2304.

I would like to have a high resolution so that I can fit 2 pages on the screen, especially Excel pages. A resolution of 2560 x 1080 would suit me perfectly.

It’s therefore indeed not a graphics card but a chipset, and I would be surprised if it reaches such a level of resolution (but of course, it goes without saying, when you have connected the external screen with its drivers, you need to choose in Windows, Settings-System-Display the external screen, not the laptop one).

Normally, the maximum resolution capabilities of the chipset are listed in its specifications; you need to check what they are in Display Port, which does not guarantee the outcome of the operation since an adapter is not a native Display Port, but it doesn’t cost much.

I am having difficulty finding information about the chipset. What I have been able to gather about my chipset is:

North Bridge: Intel Kaby Lake
Revision ID: 02
South Bridge: Intel Kaby Lake-Y PCH
Revision ID: 21

Hello everyone,

I spoke with my colleague who has the same PC. He is projecting at 2560x1440 via HDMI on a 27" screen (Aorus).

So the issue is not the laptop.

I found a first lead, I disabled the HDR on my monitor, so I can switch to 2560x1440 but that's the maximum and it doesn't offer me a 21:9 resolution.

I found a temporary solution; I went through the INTEL graphic settings (right-click on the desktop) and then I inserted a custom resolution of 2560x1080. I still haven't managed to set 3440x1440.
