VLC and Chromecast no longer work together Solved

Question

Hello,

Until recently, I had no problem casting via Chromecast to my TV: YouTube, web pages, VLC.

Lately, everything works except VLC... there's just a black screen with the title of the video and that's it (no image, no sound).

The recent changes: the Freebox (the other one was about to die), maybe VLC...

I uninstalled/reinstalled VLC, used an older version. Still the same problem.

For your information, VLC detects Chromecast well in the video/render menu.

I don't understand where the problem could be coming from; I've been searching for a few days and haven't found anything very detailed on this level (except checking the video/render menu in VLC, if there's something, it works :-/ ...)

It's done!
I had already opened the firewall permissions for VLC. But it didn't change anything.
There were several rules created for VLC...
After your message, I deleted all the existing rules concerning VLC, then I restarted, re-granted the permissions, and it works!
Phew. Sometimes, it's silly...

Hello,

You should not use an older version of VLC since casting is only supported starting from VLC 3.0

This suggests that, after changing your box, the pairing of the Chromecast via Wifi might no longer work, and you would then need to reset and reinstall it, but you say that other sites stream fine from your PC?

Another hypothesis is of course that you are trying to cast content whose format is not recognized by your TV.

Hi and thank you for your response.

I thought the same as you. I have already reinstalled/reset the Chromecast. But as you saw, it is recognized on the network (by my phone, by the PC with YouTube for example).

Otherwise, I also thought about incorrect format, so I tried with a video file that I had already cast, but with no more success...

Any other ideas? :/

Here, I tested this: casting from Chrome with the "desktop" option (so I can see everything happening on my PC). I launch VLC and the video, it works. This will be a temporary solution.
But it doesn't solve the problem with VLC and Chromecast...

When you open your media on VLC, is the screen black during VLC playback before casting, or when you try to cast to the TV?

In the second case, it's normal behavior if the stream is properly redirected to the TV.

Tests done, and apart from the sound (which is my soundbar), I have the image in all cases: YouTube from Chrome on the PC and on my phone, VLC on the PC.

While we're being tricky, is there a firewall issue?
VLC must be allowed TCP IN and OUT on the local network.
I don't know your Box, the Chromecast must be permitted for its local IP address (for example, 192.168.1.70 for me).

Hello. I had the same problem on my Macbook High Sierra with a 1080p file. There was sound but no image.
The version of VLC was the latest.
I ran several tests, adjusting the preferences here and there. I eventually reset everything in VLC after many attempts.
The issue was with the format, which was in h265. With an h264 file, everything works fine in 1080p.
I have both sound and image.
