At my place it works; for example, right now to type the "pipe" character here, I hold down both Shift and Alt keys, then I press the L key and it gives me this:

|

I do it 3 times in a row:

Go to your system preferences / Keyboard / Input method, and check the box that allows you to have the Keyboard Viewer in the menu bar:

You will then be able to see "live" the response of your key presses

Hello Brigitte,

The character "|" is called "pipe"
It should not be understood as the French word for the object used to smoke tobacco, but rather the word tube or pipe because that is the English word used to refer to the character "|". If you want to hear its pronunciation in English, click on the speaker icon on this Google Translate page:

Why does this character "|" have an English origin?
It's because in computing, this character is used to chain commands:
command 1 | command 2

This syntax indicates that the result of command 1 should be used as input for command 2, but I won’t go further into the details, that would be more off-topic.

So let's return to your request for clarification (
I press Alt + Shift + L and it doesn’t work. Should I click somewhere first?
) that you made following Francis's response, whom I greet by the way.

This character "|" is obtained like this:
- press Alt and hold down the Alt key
- press Shift and hold down the Shift key (so you have both Alt and Shift keys pressed)
- press L (so you have three keys pressed)
- release all three keys at once: you should get a beautiful character |

Note: in the syntax "Alt + Shift + L", it should be understood that the character + means "keep the key pressed"

Thank you for your response.
I didn't understand the ellipsis after the L...
I now understand that it's simply an L, but I press Alt + Shift + L and it doesn't work.
Should I click somewhere first?
I'm sorry to bother you.
I look forward to hearing back from you.
Best regards.
