Hello,
I'm looking to add accents to my uppercase letters in text areas created with Gimp. Of course, shortcuts like alt+144 and alt+0201 don't work. I've seen someone ask this question before, but since it's from 2011 and the answer didn't suit me, I allow myself to bring it up in a new post. The answer to that old question was to copy and paste, but that's precisely what I want to avoid, as making the alt shortcuts work would be faster, even though I currently can't activate them. Moreover, the copy and paste removes the text properties (font and size) because it adjusts to the default settings on the left window instead of the specific settings for the text area, which is why I'd like to ensure the shortcuts work or find one.
I know they worked in an earlier version of Gimp, but since then, I haven't tried and can't seem to reactivate them. If anyone has a specific keyboard shortcut for Gimp or finds a way to activate ASCII shortcuts, I'm all ears.
Thank you in advance for any responses.

Have you tried using the numeric keypad or the number keys on the keyboard?
If you are on a laptop without a numeric keypad, try using the virtual keypad (function key).

Yes, I am indeed using the numeric keypad, but unfortunately, it is not working. I have of course already tried uninstalling and reinstalling Gimp, but that did not work either.
Hello,
I think the solution is not going to be straightforward on Windows (I no longer have Windows but I've experienced the struggle without achieving it correctly), in any case I've never found a good solution other than copy/paste. However, with GIMP on Linux, it’s very simple, including for superscripts, using the caps lock and the circumflex accent...
Maybe a solution here but untested since I haven't had a single Windows at Tome for a long time: https://fr.computersm.com/46-how-to-insert-symbols-into-your-text-in-gimp-81683
Luke.
Edith (the most beautiful): you can obtain a Unicode character with Ctrl+Shift+U plus the hexadecimal code of the desired character. Section 5.6.3, "Text Editor".

Another hypothesis for why this might not work is that your font does not have accented characters...
US or UK fonts do not have accents....
Try to see if another code works, as this will help eliminate a problem with Windows.

Unfortunately, the accents on the uppercase letters of the fonts I use do work well in Word or other software. I mostly use the Comic Sans MS font, which should normally work since a few years ago, probably on an older version of Gimp, I could write with accents on the uppercase letters of this font (I do amateur translations of comics, so my fonts revolve around Comic Sans MS). I have of course checked several times that the numeric keypad is not locked; currently, only the numbers appear (for example, if I insert "2," it appears in the text box), but when I try to insert characters via ASCII codes, it unfortunately does not work.
In any case, thank you for your help! Please help me and search with me.

I don't use Gimp..
You can find solutions like using Gimp's text editor (does that exist?) or using the keyboard keys instead of the numeric keypad to enter the code in hex.

There is also a plugin to install in Gimp, but I haven't found more information about it.

Good evening Contrariness and a happy new year to you too... ;)
When I used to do that kind of gymnastics, I did it by copying the text from Wordpad into GIMP, it worked well there. Unfortunately, I can no longer give an example by taking a screenshot as I no longer have Windows: four PCs and four PCs running Ubuntu, except for an old Samsung J3 smartphone (without a SIM card) that I use as a pico-computer when I go for a walk...
Best regards.
Luke.

The price of software is inversely proportional to its ergonomics... ;-)
