Hello

There is a recipient in my contacts to whom I cannot send any message, although their address is correct, but "there are certain characters that the recipient's mail server does not recognize," the exact message being:

p6-093-barr-z.chu-nimes.fr rejected your message to the following mail addresses:
françois.jedryka@chu-nimes.fr (françois.jedryka@chu-nimes.fr)
We were unable to deliver the mail because it contains characters that the recipient's mail server does not recognize.
To resolve this issue, configure your mail program to send emails using a character set other than UTF-8. In Outlook, for example, you can make this change in Options > Advanced Options > International Options, then resend the mail. If the problem persists, forward this mail to your mail administrator.
For mail administrators
You are encountering this issue because the mail was sent using the UTF-8 character set and this is not supported by the receiving mail system. To resolve this issue, the sender can try sending the mail using another supported character set. Otherwise, if their mail server supports this feature, you can ask the recipient's mail administrator to configure their mail server to announce support for SMTPUTF8, as indicated in RFC 6531.
For more information, see Error code 5.1.17 in Exchange Online and Office 365.

p6-093-barr-z.chu-nimes.fr generated this error:
SMTPSEND.Utf8RecipientAddress; UTF-8 recipient address not supported.

I tried to look up the information on error code 5.1.17; it mentions Outlook 2010 and the rest is akin to an ancient Amazonian dialect!

Could someone who speaks understandable French for a layperson like me please help me?
I would be extremely grateful.

Best regards.

Didier

Hello,

The recipient's mail server is likely very old or poorly configured, so it doesn't support UTF-8 character encoding.

If you are sending your messages from a software, you can probably configure it to use a different encoding.

Is that clear enough?
