8+6 pin power supply graphics card 6+2 pin

Hello,

I have a graphics card from MSI, a 2070 Super, and a power supply from Aerocool. My graphics card needs a 6+8 pin, but I only have a 6+2. What should I do?

Hello,
do you mean that on your power supply you only have one 6+2 connector (so one 8-pin connector) and that you need a 6-pin connector and an 8-pin connector?

You can use the Molex connectors from your power supply to make a PCIe connector via an adapter like this one > https://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00160525.html

To be sure, what is the wattage of your power supply?

Hello,

generally it's only 12V, so adapters would be possible.

Have you checked if an adapter exists?

But is it really 6+8 pins??? = 14 pins?

  There are 6 pins on the left and 8 on the right. When I plug the 6+2 on the right, the graphics card turns on but there's no image. I don't know if it has something to do with the one I unhooked.

I just read the manual, you either connect to the 6-pin connector or the 8-pin connector, but not both at the same time.

  This is a misinterpretation of the phrase "Connect the PCIe power cables to 6 or 8 pins".
  
  It is a general guideline regarding the cards. It all depends on the model. A GPU can be powered by either a 6-pin PCIe (alone) or an 8-pin PCIe (alone), or 2 x 6-pin PCIe or a 6-pin PCIe + an 8-pin PCIe or even 2 x 8-pin PCIe. Depending on the case, the supplied power will not be the same. The RTX 2070 SUPER™ GAMING X must be powered by a 6-pin PCIe + an 8-pin PCIe. This is not optional; both must be connected, otherwise the card will be underpowered and will not work. Additionally, MSI recommends a 650W power supply. He can still try with his 550W power supply which only has one 8-pin PCIe connector (6+2) as long as he gets a Molex to PCI-e pin adapter, like:

Apparently, the power cable for the graphics card can vary.

Otherwise, when you plugged in your connector, did it connect without forcing it?

Did you choose the 8-pin or 6-pin connector to plug it in?

And there Nvidia says exactly the opposite!

In short, it's because of the cable section that the number of connectors needs to be increased.

It seems that these GPUs really pull a lot of amps!

So even rigging a cable won't necessarily guarantee good performance.

Another piece of information, Nvidia specifies at the beginning of the manual that you need a power supply of at least 650W!

    Power is like a gas pump feeding an engine; it's enough to get it started and idle, but when you need power to go uphill, the engine won't reach its power and it will be impossible to make it up the hill!
    
    So if Nvidia talks about 650W, it’s recommended in the manual, so if you don’t follow what’s stated, you can't say the product doesn't work well if you have a lower power supply.
    
    Other than that, power supplies can also be resold.

    What you forget is that, even if the GPU "only" consumes 250W, it doesn't exist on its own, but is associated with other components that also consume power. So the recommended consumption is an estimate of the GPU consumption plus that of the other components. Although GPU manufacturers tend to overestimate the consumption of their products, it gives a good idea for choosing the power supply. A 550W power supply may, perhaps, be sufficient, but it must have one 6-pin PCIe connector and one 8-pin PCIe connector. It cannot rely solely on a single 6-pin PCIe connector, especially since, according to the information I've been able to gather, a 6-pin PCIe connector can provide a maximum of 150W.

    Simple rule.
    The PCI Express slot can deliver 70W.
    A 6-pin connector takes over for cards consuming between 70W and 140W; for cards consuming between 140W and 200W, a second 6-pin is necessary, and so on, depending on the power levels.
    And of course, all the plugs present on the graphics card should be connected; they are not just for decoration...

It should work on your 550W, buy an adapter like the one I showed you and try again.
