Hello
I have been using two connected speakers through the Jack port of my PC running Windows 10 for a long time.
For the past three days, when I want to listen to music, the sound comes from the PC.
Whether the Jack plug is plugged in or not, it makes no difference; the sound always comes from the PC.
A small clarification: when I unplug the Jack plug or touch it, sounds (crackling) come out of the speakers.
Could the problem be due to a bad connection of the Jack plug?
Thank you in advance for all your suggestions and comments.
Best regards

Hello,
the jack connector is fragile, very fragile; after a while, one of the tabs may break.
Do you have a laptop or a desktop computer?
If it’s a desktop, test the back socket.
Sometimes, since sound cards have become intelligent, you can even plug your connector into another jack, even the microphone one.
You need to go into the sound card menu, 99% of the time it’s Realtek, and check if it detects a jack connector plugged in.

Good evening
This is an HP Pavilion Notebook laptop.
I don't see a sound card. I only have:
- Audio, video and game controllers
- Audio inputs and outputs

If you don't plug in a jack, do you hear the sound through the PC's speakers?
In the Windows settings, do you not have a control panel regarding audio?

Hello
Yes, I can hear the sound from the PC correctly whether the Jack plug is plugged in or not.
Of course, I have audio settings in the control panel.
As options, I have:
- Change the volume of the device or application.
- Change other audio settings:
- Tabs:
. Playback
. Recording
. Sounds
. Communications
In the playback tab I have:
- Speakers (checked in green with the balance that changes according to the music)
High Definition Audio Device
Default device
- Headphones
High Definition Audio Device
Default communication device
This function is checked with a red arrow pointing down if the Jack plug is unplugged and in green (same as speakers) when I reconnect the Jack plug). However, it doesn’t change anything for the sound output. In all cases, the sound comes from the PC and not from external speakers.

I don't understand this passage?
"I can hear the sound from the PC correctly whether the Jack plug is plugged in or not. "
When you plug in the jack, do you still hear the sound from the PC?

Exactly
It's always the PC's internal sound, whether the Jack plug is connected or not.
The speaker sound doesn't work. However, the speakers do work because when I fiddle with the Jack plug, the speakers produce crackling sounds.
I suspect the connection (Jack plug --> PC) seems defective.
I'm going to try to get another Jack plug to see if that works and also plug my Jack plug into another PC as soon as I can.
Unless you have a quicker solution to suggest to me??

Oups, it's been 22 years since I last had a TV!!!!!!
But I just tested the headphone jack on my phone and it works very well. The speakers work!!!
So it’s coming from the PC side
As soon as I can, I'll try to find another headphone jack to check.

By clicking on the sound icon in the taskbar, do you not have an arrow that drops down the output options?

If
I have the choice between headphones and speakers
It is the speakers that are selected
I just found a pair of headphones. I connected it via a USB port because there is no Jack plug on the headphones. An option was added to the previous two (FREETALK Everyman speakers) and it works very well.

More on message 9
"I'm going to try to find another jack to check"
Are you talking about another cable or changing the jack on the PC?
Changing the jack on the PC is still a long way off.
It could just be the driver or ...
You didn't give feedback on the test with a headset on your PC.
With your phone, you probably had a headset provided that’s lying around in the box at the bottom of a drawer if ever used.

Messages overlap; I hadn’t seen your last one:

Click on Headset, and the sound should come out through your external speakers.
Headset = your external speakers
Speaker = PC speakers

REMINDER of my previous message:
I just found a headset. I connected it but to a USB port because there is no headphone jack on the headset. An option has been added to the previous two (FREETALK Everyman speakers) and it works very well.
But in this case, if I click on "headset," it doesn't work.

As mentioned, the beginning of the message before seeing your message. (and following addition after seeing it)
Your USB headset test is not helping us ...
Don't you have a simple headset with a jack?
like the hands-free one usually provided with phones
(which tends to get forgotten in a drawer ;-) )

Oops, indeed, upon further investigation, I just found a little Jack plug probably from a phone!!!!
If I plug it in, nothing happens. No new detection on the PC and the sound doesn't come out of the headphones connected to the Jack plug.
So it's definitely a connection problem, either a defect in the plug or an issue on the motherboard side of the PC.
I don't think it's the drivers because I ran the suggested tests and the result says everything is okay.

I will therefore classify and see on the computer if it is repairable.
Thank you very much for your patience and your feedback.
Have a good afternoon.

You're welcome because it's not over ... ;-)
Taking it on its own, we will check everything before because it would be problematic.
On mobile, there's a chance that this socket is soldered to the motherboard.
(to know, you need to disassemble it or find a video of a teardown of the same model)
Check the Windows drivers, it will always say "everything is fine" because if it makes a mistake while installing, it won't contradict itself. We can't rely on that.
----------
So let's continue with the checks that cost nothing
(to be done with speakers connected or headphones)
1 > Right-click on the sound icon
Choose "open volume mixer"
Check that the sound is not muted or too low on your jack output (external speakers)
2 > Right-click on the sound icon
choose "Open sound settings"
The page that opens at the top line, select your output corresponding to your speakers.
See what it gives.
3 > Go to your device manager
Right-click on your sound card
properties
driver tab
If you have the option not grayed out, revert to the previous version, then do it, we'll see. (restart the PC before being sure of the result)

A very big thank you because it is working normally again!!!
Points 1 and 2 didn’t yield anything. I had already checked
however for point 3:
I don’t have a sound card option but
- Audio, Video and Game Controllers
I had looked at it but I had forgotten to update the 3rd line “Realtek High Definition Audio”
updating the driver resolved the issue.
- Audio inputs and outputs:
nothing to say everything was up to date
Thank you again for your patience and determination which made it possible to solve this problem!!
