.dms file

Hello,

Although I found this problem, mentioned on MacBid, in 2014 and the solution of opening it by renaming the downloaded file with the .dms extension, with the original extension that needs to be known, I haven’t found an explanation for this change of extension between U/L and D/L. Because if you know the type of file, there is no need for anything.
If I double-click on the .dms file, I am redirected to the App Store to get a small utility to open this type of file called "RAR extraction Lite"

So, I would like to understand the replacement of the original extension by this one! Is it a trick to sell this decompression utility or something else? I specify that the transfer site is Uptobox.

If a specialist can inform me, I would greatly appreciate it, I like to know, it's always useful. ;)

Best regards

dede

Hello dede,

What I believe, without having total certainty, is that .dms files were originally created for Amiga computers according to the "Amiga DISKMASHER Compressed Archive" standard. A thing later acquired by Microsoft.

And that these files are disk images similar to .dmg disk images from Apple.

Which would mean that if you rename a .dms file to .dmg, it will open with the appropriate and usual utility of Mac OS. (DiskimageMounter).

And since "RAR extraction Lite" or "Unarchiver" also know how to mount these disk images, you could have used "RAR extraction Lite".

Try renaming your file with .dmg as the extension instead of .dms, and see if then double-clicking can mount it.

Hello Francis and thank you.
I found this explanation on MacBid and MacG, but it's the reason why a .mkv file is transformed into a .dms!
I wondered if there wasn't something fishy because my correspondent had indeed sent a .mkv file. He himself didn't understand what happened.
Changing the extension restored the file to its normal state, without any other manipulation.
I had tried to open it with UnRarX and others, without success, and double-clicking the file as it was sent me to the website of the RAR Extraction Lite publisher, which, when I tried to download, redirected me to the App Store.
So I searched for explanations online, wondering where the "trick" was :-)
I've already had exchanges with this correspondent without any modifications.
I didn't know this extension! You learn something new at any age ;)

Thank you Francis, always there and quick to respond.

Best regards

Dede,

I didn't read in your initial message that it was an .mkv file...
obviously, an .mkv (Matroska) file shouldn't need to be converted to a .dms file, or have its .mkv extension changed to .dms... maybe just a simple naming error?

You're right Francis, I didn't mention in my initial message that it was an .mkv, and in fact, I had two different files with the same extension, whereas a few days before, I had received other mkv files from the same sender, without any change in extension, and this friend assured me he had sent files, just as I said.
A peculiarity, or an attempted intrusion? Impossible to tell, it would have been interesting nonetheless.

Hello,
This is a compressed file, you need to decompress it with, for example, izip-unarchiver (free). For your information, the suggested application rar-extractor-lite is free as well.
Be careful that the source (uploader) is safe, as a compressed archive can contain malware.
We compress files so that they take up less space and can be downloaded more quickly, or when it comes to a folder containing multiple files, we compress it so that everything is included in one file (compressed archive) that can then be decompressed.

Hello bazfile,

RAR extraction Lite is paid on the App Store and the other apps didn't open the file as it was not compressed.
