Unreadable files after transfer from an old disk e

Hello everyone, I just recovered some files from an old external hard drive that was starting to act up. The transfer finished without an error message, but several files (videos and documents) refuse to open afterwards — some programs show "file corrupted" or get stuck loading. Does this necessarily come from the drive failing, or could it be an issue related to the transfer itself (cable, filesystem, etc.)? And more importantly, is there a recommended order of checks to run before considering the files lost? Thanks in advance for your feedback!

where could this be a problem related to the transfer itself (cable, file system, etc.)?No, this is related to the fact that the files in question were on a faulty hard drive and therefore, in fact, they were already corrupted from the start. I'm afraid there is no option in this context: a corrupted file remains corrupted and permanently unusable.

Thank you very much for your quick reply, it’s clearer now. So if I understand correctly, even though the transfer happened without any apparent error, the damage was already done before I even copied the files. It’s a bit frustrating not to be able to know it in advance... I’ll take a look at the tools you mentioned, thanks for the links. Thanks again for the help!
