Hello,
I have a Freebox Révolution and since February 2019, I've been having issues with the television service. Since February 2019, I've been experiencing very short freezes or image stutters lasting about half a second, but when you're watching a movie and you have 5 freezes every minute, it becomes quite bothersome.
For 5 years (until April 2019), I was connected via ADSL (VDSL 2+), I had a very good speed and the ability, for example, to record 2 channels in HD at the same time. I never had any freezes until February 2019 when they started appearing. Since I was transitioning to fiber in April 2019, I didn't contact Free thinking that switching to fiber would resolve the issue. But unfortunately, it didn’t change anything.
These freezes happen at any time of day without distinction. However, these freezes only occur on Canal+ channels (channel 4), Canal+ Cinema, Canal+ Series, Canal+ Family, Canal+ Sport, and Canal+ Décalé. On all other channels (TF1, France 2, M6, etc.), I have no problems. Moreover, the freezes only appear on encrypted programs such as movies. Clear programs like the Canal Football Club show have no freezes. Interestingly, during the lockdown period, Canal+ made their channels free to view for the whole of France, and miraculously, I had no freezes even on movies. When Canal+ stopped the free broadcast on April 1st, the freezes returned as before, only on encrypted programs. I should specify that these freezes appear whether I access Canal+ through the Freebox Canal+ interface or through the Free interface on channels 4, then 41, 42, 43, 44, and 45.
I called Canal+ about ten times, and 15 incident tickets have also been opened with Free. I’ve been told that a technician (from Orange, I suppose) will check my line, but the problems are still there.
I've unplugged and replugged everything, connected each box to a separate socket, swapped the Freeplugs, connected both boxes via Ethernet (category 6), set the reception quality to low, stopped the Wi-Fi on the box, changed the port speeds in myFreebox/settings/switch/configuration, changed the Wi-Fi channel, changed the HDMI and Ethernet cables connected to the box, etc.
I should specify that I have not installed any new electrical appliances in February 2019 that could have caused interference. Logically, if it were an issue of bandwidth, interference, or cables, it should affect all channels since they are all in HD and not just the Canal+ channels when they are encrypted.
I also changed the Freebox player but it didn’t change anything. I also tested with the Canal+ cube connected via Ethernet to my Freebox server, and there were no freezes, but I returned it since there’s a rental fee of €6 per month and the comfort of this box, particularly the remote control, is far behind that of the Freebox. For the record, when I access Canal+ on demand, I have no freezes. Of course, you might suggest I watch the movies from there; that's actually what I do, but not all Canal+ programs are available for replay, and I record a lot of cartoons for my children, not to mention the times I watch Canal+ live.
Where does the issue come from? Surely not from my setup (I think I’ve tried everything). I thought of one thing: as I mentioned, until April 2019 I was on ADSL because there was no fiber in my street. The problems started in February 2019, coincidentally or not, when the fiber cabinet was installed in my street between December 2018 and February 2019. But if it were my line, it should affect all channels indiscriminately, right? Moreover, when I switched from the ADSL line to the Fiber line, the problems remained. However, these are two distinct lines. I believe the issues come from further away. For my location, I live in the North, in the Lille agglomeration (Neuville En Ferrain 59960).
First, a big thank you to those who took the time to read my message this far. Sorry for the details (and I'm still forgetting some), but I preferred to be precise. Do you have any ideas or modifications/settings to try on my box? Have other people experienced the same issue? If so, could you give me your first name, last name, and place of residence so I can note it in a letter I plan to send to Free?
Thank you in advance for your responses.
