Packard Bell external hard drive issue

Good evening,

I bought a Packard Bell Store and Save 3500 external hard drive. The first time I connected it to my computer, it was recognized.
I "thought" I saved music files on it, but oh! horror, now that I need it, my computer no longer recognizes the external hard drive.
So I tried it on another computer, and the same issue: the external hard drive doesn't show up....

Help, I don't know what to do!!! I normally have all my music on this thing!!!
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0

same problem with a DD qstore & save 2500 (only works with the usb cable).
continuous beeping as soon as it is connected and it is not recognized by the computer. However, it works perfectly well on my other PCs, I don't understand.
Maybe a usb driver issue...

Hello,
Are you sure that its power supply is working well?
Do you hear the hard drive spinning?
See you!

I'm not in agreement: if you disconnected your external HDD via USB or power during a transfer, then you lose the file being transferred and, if the HDD has a cache, those that were in that 4 or 8MB cache. This is far from most of the data on the HDD.

Here is my experience with my Store & Save 3500:
1: Connected for the first time to a PC, everything is fine, I backed up 6 years of digital photos and family videos,
2: 1 month later I want to complete my backups:
- I plug the drive into power: it doesn't spin and makes little noises ("tick, tick, tick, ...") 2 per second
- I plug it in via USB on the same PC: no USB drive recognized and still the "tick"
- I checked with my multimeter that the power supply was providing current: no problem.
- I looked at the PackardBell support pages, and I came across the topic: Your HDD makes beeping sounds at regular intervals: Call us... (It's one of the few topics where they don't provide an answer in their FAQ)
- Then I saw several forums discussing this issue.
- There, I didn't wait, I had 6 years of private life in it, I opened the case, connected the hard drive to my tower and there, by miracle, no problem, I was able to move my data elsewhere.
3: Then I reconnected the HDD to its case to continue my tests...
- Another day, it was recognized, the "ticks" stopped after 10 minutes, I unplugged the USB, then reconnected, reformatted, uploaded files, deleted, everything was fine, until the moment I removed the power supply (properly of course) then reconnected another day and there: "tick, tick, tick, tick, ..."

What I'm sure of is that the problem is neither with the HDD nor with the power supply. The circuit board and components don't seem damaged. I conclude that it comes from the integrated circuit...

I can't return this to customer service because I've opened it, and it's obvious (I had to force on two screws that were stuck).

Sometimes I reconnect it hoping to see the "thing" work again and attempt new tests. So far, it’s unsuccessful. But in my tower, the HDD is still functioning. Unfortunately, it's an external HDD that I wanted...

That's it.
Good luck to you,
Storm.

Hi Sotrmbringer,
How did you take apart the HDD? I only found 2 screws and I can't remove it.
HELP please

If it's the same as mine:
- remove the two screws.
- remove the black plastic cover on the screw side.
- Finally, don't pull, but push the contents inward.
Normally, all the contents will come out the other side with the black cover remaining.
And there you go...

Hello

Is it possible to recover the data from the hard drive?

Thank you because it’s tiring trying to solve these Packard Bell issues (the noises from the hard drive) and even the phone support makes it seem like the problem isn’t conceptual.
Thank you for the comment.

Hello,

I also have this problem of my external hard drive not being recognized, with the light flashing...
but on my side, the drive doesn't spin
it was working... I connected it to a Vista computer... maybe disconnected it improperly...
and since then, it's no longer recognized... neither by the TV nor the computer

I'm really afraid I've lost 5 years of photos and a lifetime of music!

I NEED HELP!!!

oh dear, oh dear...
So many problems:
>for XAV: 1) if your HDD is not spinning > it’s the power supply that is defective.
2) if you have disconnected your HDD (by mistake...) while it was still powered > you might lose
a large part of your HDD data.
3) HDD not recognized: possibilities > Be careful, if your USB is low speed 1.1, or high speed 2.0: let me explain; If your PC runs Vista: it’s a recent computer, its USB ports are probably 2.0. If your HDD has a USB 1.1 connection, it is possible that this USB 1.1 is incompatible with USB 2.0. (I had this problem recently with a new PC...). "It worked"... yes, probably on an "old" PC equipped with USB 1.1 > hence the problem.

>for EATAINE: 1) that "radio" noise chhhhhhh (I’m mimicking) end of frequency band > it’s certain, it’s not normal for a transformer: at most it hums softly. Your trick with customer service is good (they need to get their act together too !!). You have nothing to lose now... Otherwise, you will have to buy a new compatible transformer/adaptor with the output voltage and current at https://www.conrad.fr/ for example (wholesaler in electronic equipment). The voltage and output current of your transformer/adaptor are indicated on a small label affixed to the adaptor.
The blinking of the LEDs is normal (generally: PWR (power) red; USB MODE yellow or orange; RW (rewrite) green. If a LED is faulty PWR, it’s not too serious. But, if it’s RW, it’s more serious. However, the fault in the LED lighting is not always a formal indication of HDD failure; the LEDs themselves may be faulty.

>for N3TW@RR!0R: USB 1.1 and 2.0 compatibility issues.

>for rebelle57: If your HDD is overheating Really too much (to the point of "burning"...) There is danger, your HDD may fry. Your internal power supply in your external HDD case is faulty; You need to dismantle the case and extract the HDD (if possible...) and buy another empty external case and reconnect the HDD in the new case. No other solution, unless you know about electronics...

>To possibly try to recover some data from an HDD; see the software indicated by CCM below:
Restoration 2.5.14
good luck, and take care.

Hello

I'm inserting myself into your thread because I have a similar problem:
- the hard drive light blinks alternately red/green, etc...
- the transformer makes a noise when you put your ear to it, a kind of noise you can hear if you tune an old FM radio to the far right (in the high frequencies, here we say you can hear the beacons...)

I called Packard Bell's customer service... They told me it was probably the power supply, but before sending me a new one, I needed to test the drive with another power supply...

They're cool, I don't have another power supply, so what should I do?

I feel like calling them back and saying that it works with another power supply... but if once I receive the new power supply, my drive still doesn't work, I'll be in a bind...

Good luck to the first one who finds the solution!

Good evening,

and thank you for responding

yes, it works well. However, there is a light that comes on when I plug it in, then goes off.... and it makes little noises, like beep.......beep........

Hello,
these little noises, and the light that goes out, that's not normal...
Your hard drive should start up without these symptoms: there is a defect (most likely hardware)
- If it was recognized before by your PC: it was already formatted... that's good.
- You haven't changed the letter of your HDD after use; e.g.: HDD(D:)> then (E:) as an example:
that's called renaming a drive. Or, giving it a name?
>>> In my opinion, it's the power supply of your HDD that is not working well:
-- You need to take it back to the store where you bought it and explain the problem to them.
>>> You can't fix this yourself.
But it might not be serious and it could just be a faulty connection (disconnected).
See you later.

OK, I'll do that.

Thank you in any case. Bye bye.

Hello,
I'm sorry to continue on this subject, but I have a little question.
What happened to your hard drive???
Has it been emptied??
And what was the problem?
Because I have exactly the same problem, I just sent it back for service, but I'm afraid they will empty it for me.
Thank you in advance for your reply.

Me too, I have the same problem, beep beep... tick.. tock... I hope it's just the adapter! Can you let us know what's up with yours?

As for Agnes's, I don't know, nor about mine since it's been sent for repair and I still haven't recovered it. As soon as I have answers, I will let you know.

What's this nonsense? I've been having the exact same problem for two days; the hard drive is unresponsive and makes the same noise, the light that turns on goes off, etc. However, it heats up... What to do... fast!!!!!!

I have exactly the same problem with the Store & Save 3500.

Has any of you contacted Packard Bell's customer service?

Exactly Stormbringer,
There is the HDD cache.

I just bought a Packard Bell external hard drive, silver, 160GB, mobile.
I have a Mac, an iBook G4 version OS 10.4.11
When I plug in the hard drive, it beeps....beep beep beep beep! and the computer doesn't recognize it.
As a result, it's new and it's useless.
Where could the problem come from?

Hello,
I have a problem with my Store and Play 3500 external hard drive. I've broken the end of the SCART cable that connects to the hard drive. Since it's out of warranty, the stores tell me to go to the website to buy a new cable, but I'm unable to access this type of accessory, and they refuse to take my order over the phone. I'm desperate... Help me

In your case, I would solder the cable to the hard drive:

Step 1: Cut the end, leaving 5 cm of cable extending from the end.

Step 2: Probe each color of wire with an ohmmeter using the connectors of the end to identify which wire goes where.

Step 3: Then, open the hard drive.

Step 4: Get out the soldering iron and the desoldering pump or braid and carefully desolder the connector where the end was connected without damaging the printed circuit board.

Step 5: Strip the cable where the SCART remains and each wire.

Step 6: Get out the soldering iron and solder each wire into the corresponding place (identified in step 2).

If you don't have what you need or don't feel comfortable, ask a friend who is good with a soldering iron.

Hi everyone, I also have a problem with my Packard Bell hard drive. So here it is, I bought it 6 months ago and until now it was working fine. Yesterday, I ran an antivirus (Uniblue Registry Booster). Since then, when I connect it, it gets detected but my computer is really slow, and when I try to open the hard drive, it tells me that it can't and asks if I want to format the volume. What should I do to avoid losing my data?

P.S.: It's the Graphite 1TB.

So I had the same problem, so it was sent to customer service.
I got it back 3 weeks later because where I bought it, there had been 5 returns of the same model.
It was repaired, and what they explained to me is that a part that should connect the hard drive to the USB port of the case was faulty.
And I want to inform you that you shouldn’t hope to recover your data.
My 400 GB were deleted by customer service.
Hoping to have helped you with your problem.
