Hello,
the problem comes from the security of the FREE server,
you need to go to the settings of your Thunderbird email account
and temporarily disable the security control of the connection
SSL/TLS, that should work but be careful, there's no more email security.
FREE needs to review its obsolete SSL/TLS protocol for the new version of Thunderbird.

I just hope that Free will fix the issue as soon as possible.
Note: I have the problem on both Linux Debian Buster, Stretch, and Windows 7.
However, my "spare" drive works properly, but it must not be the latest version of Thunderbird!
It's normal that you're having issues with Thunderbird 78 configurations and Free since that's where it occurs!
It's normal that you don't have this problem with earlier versions of TB since they do not implement TLS 1.3!
The ball is in Free's court as it's the only ISP causing this problem.
