To insert ¼, hold down the Alt key and type 0188 on the numeric keypad, then release the Alt key; for ½, it's 0189; for ¾, it's 0190.

If it works the proof ½ you shouldn't do as instructed, you need to keep the Alt key pressed while typing the number.
