Locked password on Terminal

Hello there,

when I enter a sudo command in Terminal, the application asks for my password but shows a small key and refuses to execute anything when I enter the password. I don't have this issue on my old MacBook for the same command. Any advice or solution? Thank you!

    Maybe the activation of the root user has not been done?

      Thank you Ritchi. I tried to follow Apple's recommendations but I couldn't find the option to activate the root user in the directory utility. So I'm stuck.

      - What command do you type in the Terminal?
      - I don't understand the need to activate the root user in the directory utility: can you explain what your need is?

      This command:
      sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts

      This is actually the procedure recommended by Apple.

      When you run this command, the superuser root password must be typed, but no characters will be displayed: you need to type it blindly.
      Question: have you activated the superuser root account?
      Another question: why would you want to modify the /etc/hosts file?
