Lost password on Mail Solved

Question

Hello,I am unable to retrieve my email password. I go to Mail, Preferences, Accounts, Account Information, and I cannot copy the password displayed under the username. Why is that? It's strange.Having recently had everything stolen, I have no information left. What should I do?I would really like to recover my account but I don't know how to proceed. No, that's not what I meant. I had a bunch of stuff stolen in Thailand, including my bag which contained all my information, namely that of my stolen MacBook Pro, but also that of my iMac since I kept my accounts’ details such as Yahoo, Facebook, and email passwords in a password agenda, etc. from my various computers.
Let's not talk about the MacBook Pro which has nothing to do with my current issue, it was more or less a joke related to my recent bad luck.
The problem I’m facing is that there doesn’t seem to be, or at least I haven't found, a way to recover the Mail password. There is a password in the advanced information of Mail, but no copy option to paste it into the login window.
So what can I do?
I need to send attachments quickly and Yahoo is bugging as usual these days, so I'm really annoyed.
I tried to change my Gmail password but it doesn't work.

Hi,

You can never copy a password, whether it's in any email software or on the internet.

If you don't have your password, connect to the internet and click on Forgot Password.

You will receive a reset link.

Good evening,

On Mac OS, passwords are not stored in Mail, but in the Keychain Access application. This avoids having to type it every time you log in.
So, on Mac OS, you can retrieve passwords, but of course, only if they have been saved in Keychain Access. (Applications / Utilities / Keychain Access..)

This means that if a Mac has been stolen, the Keychain Access of the new replacement Mac is empty....

In such a case, the situation is difficult because if you use the "forgot password" feature on any account, the recovery procedure will be sent to the email address associated with the stolen Mac, but not to yours which replaces the old one... it would be helpful to provide more details about the theft and the exact conditions you are in to offer more assistance.

Hello Rose Tattoo,

If the messaging is working, it means that the password is stored in Keychain Access. It is the password management software, various keys, certificates, etc.

In this case, you should not look for this information in Mail, for obvious security reasons, but in the Keychain Access application located at:
Applications / Utilities...

You launch Keychain Access
You will see several categories in the left column, usually it's the "Local Items" category that you need to choose
In the right part, you will see several rows, and it is easy to identify the rows that concern an email account, for a password of a pop or imap account type. Some email accounts use a password for receiving, like all, but also for sending. (imap accounts in particular).

You choose the row you want, you double-click on it to open the window that concerns this password, you will then see the Attributes, Access Control, (the software that uses this password),
in the Attributes, you check the box "Show password",
and then, the system will ask you for your Mac session password - which is normal, otherwise anyone could search for your passwords.

After entering your Mac OS session password, you will see your email account password displayed in plain text. You can copy it. Do not perform any false manipulation, it is just to copy it, not to modify it (which could be done).

Thank you Francis, daddy, and Dédé, finally a new system, all that's left is to install Mountain Lion so I can install my version of Lightroom and it'll be perfect ;). Is it true that Mountain Lion is better than Lion? I had it on my stolen MacBook Pro and I didn't find the version of iPhoto great because all the photos were marked with a Facebook tag, which I had to uncheck every time, a real hassle. I've read that I can jump from Snow Leopard directly to Mountain, is that correct?

Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) is significantly better than Lion (Mac OS 10.7).
Lion is the first version that is truly 64-bit and marks a break from the older versions of Mac OS (10.3, 10.4, 10.5, 10.6 ...). It is also the first version of the Macs that were supplied without any DVDs, with a recovery partition installed. However, this version infuriated more than one user due to its quirks, particularly the disappearance of the "Save As" function for Apple applications, among other things.
Apple quickly had to revise its work, which led to the production of Mountain Lion.
Then came Mavericks, and now Yosemite.
Mountain Lion is still available, but it is a paid version, whereas the last two versions have been provided for free. In fact, if Lion and Mountain Lion are still sold by Apple, it is meant for Macs that cannot upgrade to Yosemite. Some Macs are hardware-limited to Lion, others to Mountain Lion... if your Mac supports Yosemite, there's no need to buy Mountain Lion.

You need to know the exact model of the Mac and its installed memory capacity to recommend one version or another. (the latest versions are more demanding in terms of installed RAM capacity)

The slowness encountered under Yosemite is still due to insufficient RAM capacity. Memory management under Yosemite, and already under Mavericks, is different from older systems, aimed at improving overall system speed, but this assumes a sufficient amount of memory. The ideal for Yosemite is to have at least 8 GB of RAM installed. 4 GB is too little, 6 GB is "okay", even though it's not great.

The serial number '9QE6PVQD' returns an error on the Apple site, either the Apple server is not available, or there is a typo. But despite this, according to the provided information, I can deduce that the model is: iMac 20" mid-2007.
This model of Mac can support a maximum of 6 GB of RAM (even though initially, Apple announced it for a maximum of 4 GB).

However, this Mac currently has 3 GB of RAM, which is too little for Yosemite, and even too little for OS X 10.8, especially with a "only" 2 GHz processor.

What needs to be done to upgrade to Yosemite is to replace the current 1 GB stick with a 4 GB stick - thus the Mac will be at its maximum possible (1 stick of 2 and 1 stick of 4 GB).

As for the choice between spending to upgrade the RAM or moving to Mountain Lion, it's quickly made: it's better to spend on the RAM, since Mountain Lion will also be too tight with 3 GB of RAM. So it would be a bad expense. Whereas increased RAM will allow you to either stay under the current system with more comfort anyways, or potentially test Yosemite, which is free. You can even install the latter on an external disk initially for testing after creating a USB installation key according to this method:
