Clipping mask: permanently remove the unnecessary part

Hello,
In Illustrator CS4, I've cropped JPEG images (using the clipping mask). The problem is that the rest of the image, which I don't want, still remains in the file (albeit hidden, but it takes up a lot of space).
How can I remove this unnecessary part?
I've already read posts on this topic but I didn't understand the proposed solutions...
