Hello,
I want to install openSUSE on an old PC (in multiboot, with several partitions, including one with Vista). I had already performed a similar operation 10 years ago (on the same PC) but with Ubuntu. As I remember, the installation overwrote the MBR, which I had to repair (with UBCD or something similar, I don't remember exactly, but it was a real nightmare).
What I would like today is to back up the MBR so that I can restore it from a bootable USB stick in order not to struggle to repair it. However, the research I’ve done today only offers solutions that seem to work once the PC has booted (see
My question: Does anyone know of such a utility?

https://korben.info/comment-sauvegarder-reparer-et-restaurer-sa-mbr.htmlwhich proposes a set of solutions), but if the MBR is damaged, the system won’t boot, hence my search for creating a bootable USB stick specifically for this purpose.

Hi,
If the MBR is damaged, you must start from a USB key in any case.
You can create a Windows Vista bootable USB key.
The ISOs can be downloaded here: https://www.malekal.com/telecharger-iso-windows-vista/
After that, you can use Rufus, for example, to create the USB key.
From there, a command
bootrec /fixmbr
should restore Windows to the MBR.
or
Use The Malekal Live CD
On it, there is BootIce which allows you to back up the MBR.
If needed: BootIce Tutorial.
You restore it with "Restore MBR".
