Hello,

I am reaching out for your help because I have a problem accessing the files on a Western Digital Elements 2.5" 1TB external hard drive.

The hard drive is connected via USB and was working well until a few days ago. Now, when I try to open most of the files, it indicates that the device is not ready. Copying is also impossible.

Randomly, the hard drive is recognized in the Windows disk management and is visible in File Explorer, while other times I hear the connection beep, but it is not recognized. When it is recognized, I can navigate through it without too much trouble, but I cannot open the files.

What I have already tried:
- changing the USB cable;
- testing on other USB ports;
- testing on another PC;
- cloning the partition -> message "failed to read from sector 0 of the hard drive 3. Please try the operation again. If the error persists, check the disk using the Check Disk Utility and create a backup of the disk" during the analysis of devices connected to the PC;
- repairing the disk with CHKDSK -> impossible because the HDD is supposedly in RAW while it is indicated as NTFS in disk management... Then if it were really in RAW I shouldn't have access at all, it seems to me;
- changing the enclosure -> impossible because the USB connector is soldered to the hard drive;

A strange behavior is that the hard drive appears in File Explorer and disk management as NTFS, but CHKDSK interprets it as RAW...

Do you have any idea how to resolve this issue?

Thank you in advance for your response.

    Hello,
    Since you tested the cable and it disconnects regularly, it’s possible that the case is faulty, see this page.

      Hello bazfile,

      First of all, thank you for your reply.

      The problem is that the USB connector is directly soldered to the hard drive's board, so it's impossible to change the casing.
