Right-click not working on the desktop Solved

Question

Hello,

For some reason that I don't know (maybe because I tried to reinstall updates that hadn't been installed)
I can no longer right-click on my desktop (nor on the shortcuts located there)
However, it works on applications and even in the folders on my PC (the issue is therefore precisely at the desktop level).

I would like to clarify the following:
_ The updates did not install, I clicked "retry" in Windows Update without it working
_ I wanted to do a system restore but it wasn't activated, so there was no restore point to use (I activated it not long ago, but this solution is therefore not feasible).

If anyone has an idea

Houla... and why not dismantle the computer? Lol let's be pragmatic, the right-click crash is solely due to certain apps that add context menus that cause the right-click to crash.... so there's just one solution:

On your keyboard, press the Windows key + R
Type regedit then OK.
Expand on the left HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\
Delete the following folders if present:
igfxDTCM
igfxcui
NvCplDesktopContext
Once deleted, restart the computer

And you will enjoy the normal use of your "right-click" on your desktop, in your Explorer windows, etc.... and you will especially not have to redo your entire computer, your Windows, your apps, software, etc... (it will only take you 1 minute.... lol)

Hello, even if this may seem like a very simple question: Have you tried restarting your computer?  If that's already the case, have you checked your mouse drivers?

I found another solution on the web, if the previous one I gave you doesn't work, here's what you can do:

- Press the Windows key and X at the same time, a panel should open at the bottom left, you can also simply right-click on the Windows logo and select "Run"

- Enter "Regedit" in the Run window and then press Enter.
The Windows registry should then open.

- Next, you need to successively open the folders in this order in the Windows registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft
Windows
CurrentVersion
Policies
Explorer

- Then, look in the right part of the window, and right-click on "NoViewContextMenu" and delete it.

This is a key that prevents the use of the right-click on the desktop when its value is set to 1.

For some reason I cannot explain, you may have it.

Hello, there is no "explorer" under "policies" so I went directly to explorer following this path:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER Software Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer  but the key is not there..

Give the version of Windows installed on your PC

Assuming it's Windows 10 →

This PC is relatively new (bought 1 month ago)

In Cortana type → winver
Or type in Cortana → info
Then click on → system information
Note your operating system and version, you didn't specify

Can you check if by any chance Tablet Mode is activated?
In this mode, it is impossible to right-click

Click on the notification icon next to the time
Click on → Tablet Mode (to remove the highlighting)

Give the brand of your PC, the exact model and hard drive capacity, because unfortunately, if you bought a cheap PC with a 32 GB hard drive, it is impossible to perform a major update since it requires more or less that much disk space, this has already happened on the Forum
Give the name of your antivirus, Windows Defender is installed by default with Windows 10, but it could be that the manufacturer of your PC brand installed theirs (McAfee, Norton,...) or that you installed another one like Avast

-We'll look later if you can repair files with the SFC command
But also reset the PC without losing documents if it is really Windows 10

-If it isn't Windows 10 then we .........

- it could be the driver for your Nvidia graphics card
Check the update history
Go to Settings (with Windows key + i) → Update & Security → View update history.
The line → Driver updates
Do you see any Nvidia?

- Device Manager
Right-click on the Start button → Device Manager
If you can't access it in Cortana, type → control panel
Select the view: Small icons
Then click on the line → Device Manager
Go to Display adapters, double-click on your graphics card, go to the driver tab → roll back driver

Note that there is a problem with the GeForce 398.82 driver on some PCs, you may be concerned.
A reinstallation of an older Nvidia driver (with or without GeForce experience) to see.

Otherwise you can download the NVIDIA drivers without using GeForce Experience with TinyNvidiaUpdateChecker

Afterwards you could block automatic driver installation

At this stage, if you don't want to void the warranty, you can recover it

Settings → Update & Security → Recovery
Then click on → Get Started

From there, you have 2 options
Choose → Keep my files

Any applications you have installed will be removed (Microsoft decides...!!!)

The PC will restart.

Try not to reinstall the antivirus Kaspersky IS 2019 afterwards
Windows Defender is sufficient and lighter than market antivirus.

it seems that under Windows 10 it doesn’t always work, with error code messages.
You need to take another route:
Settings → Update & Security → Restart now

Then select → Troubleshoot
Then → Advanced options
Then → System restore
