Hello,
I am using Windows 7 and PowerPoint 97-2003 for my photo slideshows that I send to my friends. However, for almost a year now, the slideshows I send in .pps format arrive as .ppt to my friends.
Does anyone have a solution or an explanation?
Thanks
Configuration: Windows / Internet Explorer 11.0

Hello,
Don't look any further, it's WeTransfer's fault. PPS files are received as PPT. The problem does not exist for PPSX files.
Several solutions:
- Use another file transfer app.
- Ask friends to change the extension (PPS instead of PPT).
- Save your files in PPSX format: this is possible if you download the compatibility pack... Microsoft no longer offers it, it's too old, but you can still find it here: https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/bureautique/16799-pack-de-compatibilite-microsoft-office/
The last solution is the simplest.

There's no need to send me your questions privately. I won't answer them. -
Because your friends no longer have that old version from 2003...
Currently, they are all working in pptx or ppsx!

Thank you so much for this explanation. I emailed some of my friends to find out what their PowerPoint version is.
However, I also sent my files to my husband's computer, which is fortunate enough to have PowerPoint 2007, so pptx and ppsx. Yet, my slideshows remain slideshows and do not become presentations. What is this mystery? Could there be a problem regarding Windows, given that I have Windows 7?
Thank you. -
No, Windows is not concerned.
So let's make sure I understand correctly:
- You create a slideshow, which you save as PowerPoint Slideshow (*.pps)
- You attach this file to the email sent to your friends
- When they receive your message, the file mysteriously changes its suffix to *.ppt, which corresponds to PowerPoint Presentation. Is that right?
And when you send it to someone who also has Office 2003, what happens?
By the way, what responses have you received from your friends regarding the version they are using?

Good evening Raymond,
Yes, I am creating a slideshow that I save as a PowerPoint slideshow (*.pps). I transfer this file to my friends via WeTransfer. My slideshows are too large to attach directly to an email (between 30 and 50MB).
For some of them, when they save this *.pps file, it changes its suffix and becomes *.ppt. When I send the said file to those who, like me, have Office 2003, there is no problem. The file remains *.pps.
For now, not all my friends have replied to me yet.
But for those who have, one has Office 2016, another PowerPoint 2010, and another Office 2003. For the latter, everything is fine. For the other two, the file becomes a *.ppt.
Is there a solution to this problem?
Thanks again for your help. -
I think the explanation is quite simple: your files are much too large!
There is no solution, except to use fewer or compressed images.
Ideally, your files should not exceed 5MB ... You just have to split each of your factories into 8 or 10 manageable slides!

OK! I'm going to see how to reduce my files.
However, I have two responses from my friends that are not positive. These two friends use PP 2003. One receives my files in *.pps; and the other in *.ppt. I know that this second person has Windows 10.
I'm going to do some reduction tests, send these reduced presentations to my friends, and I will keep you informed.
Thank you for everything. -
François,
It seems that the file size is not the issue. I sent a file of less than 5MB to my friends and the problem remains the same. WeTransfer does present a *.pps file, but when downloading, the file becomes *.ppt, even though those friends are not yet on Office.
All these friends are on Windows 10. As for the PP versions, it ranges from PP2003 to PP2016. The first one to inform me that he was receiving *.ppt had just installed Windows 10.
On the other hand, the people who continue to receive *.pps are on Windows 7 with PP2003 or PP2007.
So, what could be the impact of Windows 10 on this conversion to *.ppt?
Thank you, François, for your response. -
Thank you M@rina for your response. However, I have doubts regarding WeTransfer. I have always used WeTransfer and it didn’t cause any problems, except since the arrival of Windows 10. It seems that all the people for whom the *.pps file changes to *.ppt are on Windows 10. Those who are still on Windows 7 do not have the problem. The files sent via WeTransfer remain as *.pps.

It is indeed very possible that this is related to Windows 10 which, by the way, is not supposed to work properly with Office 2003 even if we don't really have proof of that.
I just tried it with Win10 and indeed the pps turns into pps at the moment of saving.
I'm telling you, the simplest way is to install the compatibility pack and then you will be able to save in the current format.

Thank you M@rina. I’m going to do a test with the compatibility pack and check how it arrives with my friends.

Hello M@rina,
The compatibility pack is indeed the solution to my problem. Thank you for solving it. My friends with Win10 are now receiving PP2003 slideshows in *.ppsx. Great.
