My TV doesn't have an optical output.

Question

Hello, I recently purchased an LG TV (43lj500v), but once I got home, I realized that it doesn't have an optical output! However, my soundbar (equipped with 7.1 Dolby Digital Atmos technology) needs to connect via optical. I would like to know if there is any way to connect it otherwise while maintaining the sound quality of my soundbar.

Good evening William,

I strongly doubt that the adapter will work, let me explain:

Your TV has 2 HDMI ports, but they are INPUTS, which means that both video and audio come into the TV through the HDMI connection, thus the sound does not come out of it.

For sound to come out of the TV via HDMI, it needs to be an HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel), and your TV does not have that, so I'm afraid that buying this adapter will be a waste of money.

As Andy (whom I greet by the way) mentioned earlier, it's a no-go ;-)

Regarding the number of ports, you shouldn't expect budget TVs to have a multitude of ports, especially at this time.

I've already looked at major retailers selling these devices, for a Sony with as many connections I would have to spend between €700 and €900, all because screens have evolved towards LED and OLED (this technology comes at a price), and thus they have to compensate by reducing the number of ports.

I bought my Sony KDL-40BX400 7 years ago for €500, see what it has:

For that price, I can't expect a new TV as complete, no matter the brand. Sure, it doesn't have a groundbreaking design (big 4 cm wide borders around the screen), it isn't connected and thank goodness because that's unnecessary, and it's not even a LED either, but I am completely satisfied with the image quality, especially in HD.

And unlike many people who buy a new one, I couldn't care less about the thick borders; when I'm watching TV programs or anything else, I'm not looking at those borders but at the screen ;-)
