Photo transfer to a website

Hello everyone,
I am a new member reaching out to submit my first question:
As a member of a serious dating site, I want to upload a photo from my computer to my profile page. Not being a tech expert, I’ve tried everything I could, but without success. Do I need any special program for this? I can’t seem to transfer the image from my library to the site without losing it. If someone could tell me the steps to follow, I would be very grateful.
