How to transfer files between 2 desktop PCs via Ethernet?

Hello,

I wanted to follow the method described in this old post:
https://forums.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-11984484-partage-de-connexion-via-cable-ethernet#p32643582;
but it doesn't work with the Bbox Sensation, nor even by connecting the two towers together (thus without having Internet).

The goal is to transfer about 20GB from my old desktop PC running XP (sp3) to the new one running Windows 10, I don’t know how to do it!
If you have a solution, please post it; otherwise, I’ll be reduced to using the cloud, which will probably take several hours of transfer (I don’t have a USB key or an external hard drive).

Looking forward to your responses, Titi.
PS: For your information, I configured the network and entered the proposed IPs, without knowing if they are correct (192.168.0.1 and 2); I’m using a straight RJ45 cable; each PC has a different workgroup name and they are not password protected at startup.

Configuration: Windows 10 / Microsoft Edge 38.14393.0.0 and/or FF 49.0.1 for Qwant 002-1.0

    Hello.

Between 2 PCs, you need a crossover Ethernet cable:
A crossover Ethernet cable is used to connect computers running Windows, whereas a standard Ethernet cable can only establish a connection between a computer and a router, for example.
    It's the fastest solution.

    Catch you later.

      Hi,
No, today most PCs are equipped with Gigabit Ethernet cards that are AutoMDI/MDIX, so they automatically cross.
Only one needs to be AutoMDI.

    Hi,
if your two PCs are connected to the router and can access the internet, good news, they are already on a network and you don't need to configure anything regarding IP.
    So forget about fixed IPs.
You will need to set the network to private on W10 and disable the firewall on the XP.
Then, share a folder on the XP and give it a share name (right-click on the folder), for example share
Put all your files to copy in this folder.
    After that,
either the network discovery works (you will need the same workgroup) so you can access the XP by its name, or by its IP address, which you can find using the ipconfig command.
Create a user account on the XP with the same name and password as those you use on W10.
Give NTFS read permissions to this user on the shared folder (right-click security tab).
You will then be able to access the share via \\PCname\share
    or \\ip.address\share

    Hello,

I understand the concept of Windows Sharing; the problem is getting them networked. I will read this link carefully.

However, and this is my oversight, when I connect the 2 PCs to the Bbox, I only see one in the "My Computer."

What could be the reason for this?
1- Should I change the connection order from PC1: Win 10 to PC1: XP?
2- Are they in 2 different workgroups: workgroup and zalmann?
    3... ?

If they are on 2 different workgroups, it's normal that they don't see each other in the network neighborhood, that's the role of the workgroup when it works.
But it's not essential if you access the PC that shares by its IP address.
However, the names of the PCs must be different, as well as their IP addresses, of course.
