My phone drains its battery while it's charging!

Hello,
So, for the past few days my phone (Sony Xperia E1) has decided to invent a new concept! Let me explain: Every night before going to bed I completely turn off my phone and put it on charge... So far, nothing too incredible. Except that in the morning I happily find that not only has it not charged, but it has also completely DRAINED its battery! Like today, I turned it off and put it on charge with... Let's say, 30% battery, I think, and this morning it’s so drained that it won't even turn on! There's the screen with the battery showing that it's charging but that's where it stops! Plus, when I try to charge it again after that, it takes 3 times longer! Normally, when a phone doesn't charge overnight, when you turn it back on in the morning, it shows the battery percentage that it had before you turned it off!!
Anyway, just one of many problems, but this one is really starting to annoy me...
Just so you know: My phone is quite old. - I recently changed chargers but I don't think the problem comes from that since it also happened with the old one. - Sometimes it struggles to charge, normally I hear it, meaning it reacts as if it isn't plugged in. But that was mainly with the old charger.
So there you have it, if I could get a miracle answer then... I’ll offer a cookie to my hero!

It may be related to the first charger actually... which was likely defective and may have caused a short circuit. As a result, the charging is struggling because electricity is being lost... and ultimately it discharges even when turned off.
Unfortunately, given the age of the phone... I would recommend replacing it instead... :-)
