Hello, Hello, I have a Toshiba, and it suddenly stopped working. On first startup, a message appears telling me that The device needs to be repaired. Following some advice, I removed the battery and plugged the laptop into the power, and now I have the infamous black screen "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" appearing. I checked the forums, where I saw that I needed to find the boot by pressing f2 or f12 at startup. However, nothing works, not even with the other keys. Always the same message. Can someone help me? Whether you have a drive or not, you first need to find the installation file for Windows in the versions I've mentioned...  -- DVD drive, you can connect one via a USB port.. -- Otherwise, install these files onto a USB key using RUFUS https://rufus.akeo.ie/?locale=fr_FR  That's how you can do it... if the hard drive is not damaged.

Hello, Your computer apparently can't boot from your hard drive. Check if your hard drive appears in the BIOS; if it doesn't, check the connections to see if it's still properly plugged in.  -- bazfile security contributor.

Hello,  What kind of PC is it, model type and which version of Windows..?  -- Do you have no CD in the drive... nor a USB connected..?  --- You have lost your PC's boot... either the disk is damaged, or you need to repair the "Boot Manager" using a Windows installation DVD (Vista, 7, 8, 10) that should be placed in the drive before starting the PC.

And in the end, is there a way to know if it's the hard drive that's damaged? I'm completely stuck here, I have no way to reinstall Windows nor to find the boot.

OK! I finally managed to get to this screen where I have to choose between HDD/SSD, USB, ODD, and network, but all four lead to the same black reboot screen.

It's agreed that it leads to the same black screen, but you need to put USB first and HDD second.  Take this opportunity to see if your hard drive is recognized...?? If it doesn't exist, it's dead, there's no point in going any further.  So, when you have a BOOTABLE USB key in place at startup, your PC will boot from it...  You just need to create this USB key afterwards.  Yes, there is a way to know if the disk is dead or not...  You need to download the file "Hiren's BootCD" https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/utilitaires/11761-hiren-s-bootcd/ ... place it on a USB stick following the RUFUS procedure I linked earlier.. Then, put this USB stick into your broken PC and start it... it should present you with a black and white menu... choose mini Windows XP and let the desktop load. Click on the crossed tools (Screwdriver + wrench) a rectangle will appear... click on program... go down to "partition" then HDtune and launch it... With HDtune, it should show your hard drive... and you run the "Benchmark" test and then the "error scan" test which takes quite a while, for each, you should attach the photo here..  Always try what you managed to do.
