Collecting Memories

Hello!

Recently, I bought a book that I devoured in less than three hours. The main character was doing something that I've always wanted to do too: "collecting memories."
It seems simple, like that, after all, you just have to go see elderly people and ask them to tell you their life stories. But I've only been living in Réunion for a short time, and I feel uneasy bothering people while they're busy.
If you happen to have any ideas for my collection, I would be deeply grateful!

Hi,

Reach out to associations for the elderly, retirement homes, elderly people who are enjoying the outdoors in a park, ....

Explain to them what your approach is, specifying whether the memories you wish to collect are more of a "personal" type (which may provoke some reluctance) or rather of a "societal" type (lifestyles, traditions, professional practices, leisure activities, etc.... )

The "simplest" thing might be to start within your own circle, allowing you to collect and organize elements that you could then show to other people you will approach... this could "reassure" them about your intentions and thus "free" them from some reservations...

In any case, if you know how to approach it, it would be surprising if no one responds to you.... humans, by nature, generally love to talk about themselves and be in the spotlight rather than listening to others...... ;-)

See you later

Hi,
Originally I thought he wanted to collect his memories.

Hello

I presume that this sentence: "after all, you just need to go see elderly people and ask them to tell me their life story......" summarizes well his intention...

And.... without any malicious intent, I add that your interpretation illustrates well my last point: "humans, predominantly and essentially, enjoy talking about themselves and being in the spotlight more than listening to others...... ;-) "

:-)

Catch you later

Hello ^-^

I live in a very small town on the island, very isolated, and where the population is mostly young. As a result, there are no retirement homes or anything!

I was thinking more about websites, which are much more discreet (my overprotective parents don't like me talking to strangers).

But thank you for your advice,

Have a nice day!

Good evening,

Hmm... websites!

It's not easy; either elderly people are proficient in using the internet and won't particularly need an "intermediary"..... or they don't master it, and without even mentioning being resistant, they simply aren't online! (unless guided by relatives)

As for websites "dedicated" to the elderly (the fourth age).... if they can collect "personal stories".... they do it for their own publications....

@+ have a good evening.

Hi,
It all depends on your age but also on the good and bad memories!!

I will soon be 15 years old. Of course, I expect some bad memories, especially since life was less simple back then than it is today!
