External WD hard drive not recognized and 0 bytes

Hello everyone
Here is my problem, Western Digital 2TB external hard drive.

Symptoms: not recognized in the workstation, disk management shows it as disk 2 with a volume of 0 mb. P.S.: it was assigned the letter Z, if I click to initialize the disk it responds with the message: (cannot fulfill the request due to a device I/O error.) The disk seems to be spinning normally except for a small "click" every two minutes.

I have 2TB of movies on this drive; I managed to get it to work for a brief 2 minutes during which I saw all my files intact, but afterwards nothing.

I am asking for your help because I know that hard drive repair is very expensive.

Thank you very much, I appreciate it.

Hi,

It seems to me that the initialization error is normal because to initialize a disk, it shouldn't be connected via USB but via SATA.

Haven't you managed to create a partition?

If the disk isn't completely dead. (Unless it's a cable issue; touch your cable to check) you might recover your data with a good chance of success using Recuva.

But before that, you can also try TestDisk https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Etape_par_Etape

There are several tutorials online.

By paying, you could try Active@ Partition Recovery, which might be easier to use.

Hi, thanks for your help,
even testdisk doesn't recognize my disk, it's very frustrating and no, I can't create a partition, it says my disk has 0MB of volume and is unallocated.

Basically, it's no longer recognizable in My Passport 2TB, but it's detected as an unknown hard drive with 0 MB, and only in Disk Management. I think it's screwed, lol.

You can still take the disk out of its casing and connect it via SATA.

Hello to you :)

@Francoisdaoust, I've followed the conversation you had a bit and I must admit that this situation is very unpleasant. I had the opportunity to talk about this error and I'm sorry if I repeat myself, but it would be good to clarify that I/O errors could occur due to connectivity issues. For this reason, trying different USB ports, cables, and even testing on another PC would be recommended (if it hasn't been done yet).

The most important thing would be to recover the contents that this HDD holds…. for this reason, I would suggest trying a Linux Live CD that could lend a hand.

@Francoisdaoust, it's important to note that a possible cause of this type of error (I/O) could be a weakness of the HDD itself. If this HDD is still under warranty, once the data is recovered, we could consider returning the hardware (a RMA). Always after data recovery, a diagnosis via the WD tool, DLG, could be done.

Depending on the importance of the contents contained in a recalcitrant HDD, on-site intervention by recovery professionals could be considered.

@Francoisdaoust, I understand that some situations lead us to think about carrying out certain risky interventions, such as the idea that @fabul shares here (removing the HDD from the enclosure). Nevertheless, it is worth noting that this type of manipulation voids a valid warranty, on one hand, and on the other hand, risks worsening the situation. Furthermore, My Passport ( http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=gRfWa6 ) has hardware encryption protection, making any disassembly of the product unnecessary.

Please keep us updated on the follow-up and the results of the tests.

Hello again and thank you for your help.

I’m going to get a new cable today; this is my last option as I have tried everything with my USB ports on both my PC and my Mac, in addition to the programs offered by Western Digital.
If that doesn't work, I will have it diagnosed by a professional and will give you the results.
Hoping this helps others as well.

I have EXACTLY the same issue... more accessible, 0 byte disk, not visible in testdisk and a small click too.

Did you manage to recover anything in the end? Because personally, I would really like to recover some data :'(

Thank you in advance

And I've tried all the possible and imaginable programs (testdisk, easeUS, active partition, pc inspector and so on!), I made a live CD of Ubuntu yesterday, I'll try something else again tonight...
