Hello, I have an HP computer and a 500GB hard drive, and for the past 5 days, whenever I save something and then turn off the device and turn it back on, the data disappears. And when I delete things, everything comes back again.
Configuration: Windows 8 / Chrome 50.14.2661.78

Hello sparkle,
I admit that it seems extremely strange to me. Do you remember any particular circumstances in which you first noticed this behavior?
I hope you have made backup copies on another storage device of the content that this external hard drive keeps (as a precaution and in case).
One possible approach would be to test it on another PC, just to check the symptoms.
It is true that in case of strange behavior, the first reflex would be to diagnose the hard drive and check its integrity. Just to rule out possible leads, I would suggest you to proceed with that. You could use the manufacturer's diagnostic tool for this external hard drive (available for download from their website). Run a quick test and an extended test, while paying attention to the reported S.M.A.R.T. values. If you decide to post them here, make sure that the screenshots do not contain personal data.
@sparkle, have you thought about reformatting this external hard drive?
Looking forward to your response :)
