Windows Update is stuck in a loop.

Hello,
For several weeks now, I haven't been able to perform updates via Windows Update. It starts but just spins endlessly for hours.
I have version SP2, and I entrusted this PC to someone (I don't know much about it) who completely restored it due to this issue. During the restoration, she managed to complete several dozens of updates that I can see in the history, but since I got it back, when I start a search, it just loops... I've consulted various forums and I can't solve this problem. The latest action to date, today, was installing and running "winupdatefix" with no results. Thanks to anyone who can help me resolve this malfunction.

    Read the topic Windows Update: errors & issues

    I advise you, in this order, to try each time, if it doesn't resolve the issue:
    - install the updates by disabling your Antivirus. If you have multiple, do them in groups of three.
    - run Microsoft's Fix.
    - Windows Repair
    - run SFC scan; if there are unrecoverable errors, provide the CBS.log report via attachment

    Unfortunately, sometimes there is no solution to repair Windows Update.

      Hello Malekal and thank you for your prompt response!
      - Disabling the antivirus had no effect, it keeps looping
      - Installing and running Microsoft Fix It => error message "Unable to download troubleshooting utilities. Check your internet connection" while my connection is working...
      What should I do before moving on to the next steps?

      I would like to specify that I tried to update Windows through my antivirus Bitdefender, and that is also looping.

      -Use of FIXIT OK via the Microsoft website
      -Execution of Windows Repair (issues detected on WU but not fixed)
      -SFC scan performed, irrecoverable errors detected, I have the CBS report but I'm wondering:
      Does this report contain personal data that requires me to include a password on the attachment? If so, could you provide me with the address to which I can send this password?
      Finally, you state, "Unfortunately, sometimes there may be no solution to repair Windows Update." What should I do in this case? What options do I have?

        I have three files from the SFC scan output:
        - one that is 1kb (I don't think it will interest you

    Same problem for me..

    Windows Update (under Vista SP2) has been running for hours and hours without anything downloading and no error messages...

    I’m starting to wonder if it might be the MS server that has a problem...

      I have another machine running Vista, and it updates just fine! (I just tested it)

      So it's not a problem with the MS server; it must rather be an issue on the workstation... and my instinct tells me it might be a permissions issue (administrator or client)...

      I don't have much time today, but it would be interesting to see what happens when doing the updates in a "full" Administrator session (with extended rights)

      What's surprising is that the impossibility (for me) came overnight without me changing anything...

      As you may have read in the cited thread, it is true that since I only use this laptop to store data and "just in case" as a backup.... I haven't looked into the possible causes in detail... (I just tried the proposed solutions from time to time... none has provided "the solution" so far)

      Anyway, if you find a solution, given that there are quite a few topics on the subject pending, I think it will satisfy quite a few people!

      When I look at the update history on the post,

      The transition to SP2 (KB9484465) went smoothly and just behind it (2 days later) a "Windows Update agent 7.6.7600.256" was installed (it's not even a "KB").. and since then.. no successful updates...

      At first glance, forums are pointing fingers at this update...

    You don't seem to mention this type of error... Perhaps it would be best to open a new topic, but I'll leave it to Malekal to respond to you.

        Oh, I hadn't read it well, it's for Vista...
        Well, I imagine it's just as messy as Seven, if not worse...
        I guess you'll need to install some fix KBs to use Windows Update properly.

    1/ Windows Update error 0x80070003 (2016-06-03-T-04_19_02) Unresolved
    2/ Issues with installing recent updates Unresolved.
    I feel really alone...

      SP1 and SP2 already installed on the PC, then I click on the link for the first update "KB3168965", I click on "download" and nothing happens, and there is no link "If the download does not start, click here". What should I do? Thank you in advance.

      I restarted the PC, ran Windows Update for almost 6 hours, and it's still looping...
      Unresolved and frustrating issue.

        Yeah, Windows Update is a pain.
        Aside from insisting, I don't see much else.
        Is service pack 2 installed?

    What's going on with Windows Update?
    Whether it's Seven or Vista, it's the same issue...
    We have to find tricks by installing KB XXXXX that unlock certain updates...
    Malekal, do you think there's a security risk for our PCs?
    It's strange that Microsoft isn't reacting.
    I'm worried about entering my passwords with a shaky operating system on my PC.

      They have made cumulative updates to "simplify" things.
      Now, I think they are focusing on W10
      It makes a case for switching to it...

        Where are those cumulative updates? Do you have a Microsoft link where it's specified?
        Look, on my topic which is linked in my previous message, I'm being told:

        there are no more updates for Vista and Seven

        Even though Vista is supported until April 2017...
        I understand that Crosoft is focusing on W10, but when Seven and W8 were released, they never abandoned the previous versions like they are doing now.

        Otherwise, what do you think about security?

        The Windows Update after Vista or Seven is actually buggy...
        But apparently, some people also have issues with a fresh Windows 7.

        Even on Windows 10, sometimes you have problems.

        For security, it's not great in the long run.

      Personally, I have no more issues with updates on my Vista..

      I leave the computer running 24/7 with search and download set to automatic (but without installation)
      And there are regularly updates to install. The latest ones were on 08/17 and tonight there are 2 new ones (Windows Defender update and another one for Outlook 2007 which I don’t use)

    152 updates installed on 08/18.. The link provided by Malekal above seems to have resolved part of the issue, only part of it because the WU search continues to loop, but updates have finally been installed... I will therefore close this report, not forgetting to thank Malekal and everyone who has exchanged ideas on this issue, directly or indirectly. Thank you all!
