Hello, I just got myself a Western Digital My Book 3.5" Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 / USB 2.0 4TB to transfer my movies and watch them on my TV. I successfully transferred everything from my PC to the drive, but once connected to my TV, I get an error message that says something like "USB port not detected or USB device not recognized." I can send you the exact message if that could help you.
I'm not very tech-savvy, so I haven't attempted anything else.
I can only say that I own another Western Digital Elements Desktop External Hard Drive 3.5" USB 2.0 3TB Black that worked very well, but I couldn't watch all the movies, just a few exceptions (movie format or compatibility???).
If anyone has a solution for me, I would be grateful :)
Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the Forum, Thrawn69 :)
Usually, most TVs support FAT32 file systems. This means the format of the external hard drive you connect should be one that the TV supports. For this reason, I'm joining @le_vilain and I encourage you to take a look at the TV documentation and check the supported file systems.
As for formatting to FAT32, it's true that Windows tools may not be applicable. However, there are processes to use ;) A look at this article would help you understand how to format the hard drive to FAT32: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=kbhj5U
@Thrawn69, don’t forget that formatting will delete the content that the hard drive already contains. Backup everything to another storage device before proceeding.
Once the hard drive is in FAT32, take @le_vilain's advice and retest it with just one or two files on it.
Talk to you later and let us know how it goes, please :)
Have a great week!

Sorry for the delay in results.
Despite all your advice, the drive does not fit my TV, so at worst, I'll connect it to my PC, which is itself connected to the TV via an HDMI cable, more "complex" but just as effective ^^
Thank you anyway for your help!!!
The post is old but my goodness!!!!!!! (3 YEARS LATE)
We can bypass the problem (at least it worked for me) by inserting a simple powered or non-powered USB2 HUB (especially for USB3 or 2 external hard drives, by the way).
