Hello everyone,
I have a problem playing .mov videos
So, a friend gave me .mov videos on a USB drive, he's on a Mac, and I'm on Windows Vista.
When I tried to play them on my laptop, no way!! I have sound, but no images.
I tried opening them with Quicktime, WMP, and VLC, but the same issue persists: sound but no images.
I tried converting them to another format (WMV or AVI), but it’s impossible!!
I did the process in Quicktime, preferences, etc.... It doesn't change anything, I still have sound, but still no image!!
Do you have a solution for my problem??
Quick Reminder: My friend transferred his videos from his MAC to a USB drive, and then I transferred them to my laptop which is running Windows Vista (just reminding in case it matters).
These are videos he transferred to his MAC via a camera (not sure if that info helps).
Thank you for your help!!

I would also like to have an answer; this question affects me as well. I work in the film industry and I cannot play a raw MOV video on my PC, despite using all the software available to me: Adobe Premiere Pro (where I made all the settings according to the camera during filming), VLC, QuickTime (with all updates), and I even tried Windows Media Player, but nothing works... I only get audio and no video... And now, with your manipulation, I have a white screen instead of a black screen... what a miracle... In short, if you have an answer to my question, I would be infinitely grateful to you...
Thank you kindly,

Hello,
I hope my answer can help you as well as everyone who has image issues on Windows with Quicktime...
For me, the problem was viewing my .mov video clips from my Nikon. Everything was fine since 2003, until a certain Quicktime update. For over a year, it has been impossible to see my clips. There was sound, but no image.
I tried everything, forums, software, etc.
I formatted my XP Pro last week for other reasons. I installed iTunes and Quicktime fresh from the web. Still the same problem.
Today, finally, I found the solution. It's surprising that no one on the forums talks about it because it's really very simple and straightforward.
Here’s my approach:
Edit Menu - Preferences - Quicktime Preferences - Advanced: check Safe Mode GDI (not DirectX)
If this works for everyone, spread the word. -

Good evening,
Thank you, I had videos made on the iPhone 4 that wouldn't play on QuickTime.
Sound OK but Video Black screen.
By checking "Safe Mode GDI," it's become fine.
Thank you -

Hello,
I actually had the same problem with videos retrieved from VHS tapes a few years ago. At that time, the encoding was done using Cinepak codecs, which Apple seems to have abandoned today. So, I opened my videos with an older version of QuickTime Pro (7.1 or 7.3), then exported them in QuickTime format again, making sure to choose the H264 codecs in the options... However, the size of each file nearly doubled.
And miracle, everything works fine, my videos play on Mac (Intel iMac) and on PC (Vista) with the latest versions of QuickTime... but to do that, you need a Pro version of QT!
Best regards... -

I have a new camera: Canon EOS 500D and I can't capture my videos. I tried going to QuickTime Player to check "safe mode GDI" but I can't find it. There is no "advanced" option in the "QuickTime preferences" section.

The previous responses didn't work for me. I converted the video to mp4 and it now plays in QuickTime.
