Hello,
I recently bought a Canon Ixus 400 on eBay with 3 memory cards and 2 batteries. So far, it was working very well, both the batteries and the cards.
But recently, when I tried to change the cards, it shows me "memory card error". None of them work anymore. Impossible to format them.
The problem is that I don't have any acquaintances with devices that use CompactFlash.
Fortunately, I was able to recover my photos thanks to the printer.
Has anyone else had this issue and is it serious, doctor?
See you soon and thank you for your help.
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 7.0

Hello everyone, I also have the same problem with the same camera. When I turn it on, it displays "memory card error". I also can't format it.
To answer your questions, at least from what I know: it's useless to change the memory card since with all the ones I had, which worked on other devices, I got the same message. The conclusion of this problem is that the issue lies within the device, and as we all know, if it's out of warranty, it's very likely to be quite expensive.
As for the cable, every time you plug or unplug it, there’s a surge in current that the device is used to when there's no transfer. The problem is that there's no protection when you're transferring files. So at the moment you unplug it while it's communicating with your computer, I assume there's another surge that could damage a component. It's the same phenomenon that occurs with USB drives: you can lose all your data if there’s an unexpected disconnection, the flash memory is overwritten by the current.
There you go, I hope you know what to do, in the meantime, I’m still going to take mine for repair.

I confirm the coverage by CANON free of charge to resolve this incident. The company VILMA, 72/76 rue du Surmelin 75020 PARIS was very efficient and very quick.

I had the same issue with my IXUS 400: error E50 when formatting the card whenever the device felt like it, and often it wouldn't even start. I eventually found a solution: I noticed that depending on how I inserted the memory card, the camera reacted more or less well, and I managed to get my memory card recognized and formatted by inserting it just slightly. If I push it all the way in: problem; if I just push it in a little: it works.
Try to see if that resolves the issue for you :)

You are a genius, Jeremiah!
It’s been 15 days that I’ve been fighting with this fucking memory card error on my IXUS 400. Missed all the photos from the last vacation… and now, miracle, by not pushing the card all the way in: it works!!! I sincerely thank you for your advice which was very valuable to me (I just need to go back to Biarritz now to take the pictures I wanted!! ) :-)

Hello, I just solved the same problem on my ixus 400. If the message reappears, you need to replace the lithium battery (type 321) that is in the device, under the lens in the bottom right corner. You need to gently lift the ribbon cable, and it’s underneath. It’s about 5 mm in diameter, and you can find it in any tobacco shop for about 6 euros. Of course, you have to disassemble the covers of the device and be careful about the length of the screws, which are not identical. This operation is very easy to perform for an average handyman.

I don't really believe that the board shouldn't be fully engaged!

And to think I almost threw it away!!!

Good luck.

It works simply by putting it back in the housing

Go to Canon, known issue is covered by the manufacturer

Why is the obtained image abnormal?
Case No: 37383

Solutions

We thank you for your trust.

In rare cases, some CCDs used in Canon digital cameras and camcorders may have a defect that affects the image.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused. Canon is committed to repairing free of charge products that have this defect.

Canon wishes to inform its customers about the details of the situation and the steps taken to resolve it.

Details of the situation:
In a few very rare cases, internal wires of the CCDs used in the affected products have been found to detach under high temperature/humidity conditions.

The signal is then not properly emitted by the CCD in shooting mode. This results in abnormal outcomes such as:

* Images do not appear.
* Images have abnormal colors.
* Images are distorted.

The LCD screen confirms these symptoms.

Solution:
We strongly recommend users who have observed these symptoms to contact their Canon service center.

The affected products will be repaired free of charge if the detachment of the internal wires of the CCD is confirmed.

Hello,
I have owned a Canon IXUS 400 since the end of 2003, and I care a lot about it, even though the screen is small, it is matte and very clear. I have also experienced memory card problems (memory card error) like other users; a friend was able to reformat it with another device, but recently when I want to take photos, the image is distorted and the colors are red. So far, it always fixes itself, but I can no longer rely on this device. They told me at Fnac that it's normal wear and tear for the device. Could you advise me?
Thank you in advance for your answers.

Hello, I had the same problem, it's a defect. You can call Canon in France, they repair it for free even out of warranty; you just have to pay 15€ for shipping. My whole family has done it; I grouped together six devices in a shipment and they all came back repaired for free. Canon acknowledges this problem and commits to repairing it. Here is my email address: jacpiret@hotmail.com

Thank you for your help typtop21. Thanks to your information, I was able to have my Ixus 400 serviced for free, which I had put away in despair for 2 years. It was taken care of by the company Vilma, a regional repairer (Ile de France), authorized by Canon, located at 72/76 rue du Summerlin, Paris 20th. This company is also present in Marseille at 117, boulevard Baille, 13005 Marseille.

I have the same memory card problem with my Canon IXUS 400 camera that I've had since 2003.
It displays Error E50 when I try to format my cards.
The problem arose when I accidentally disconnected the USB cable between the camera and my computer while the camera was powered on.
My question is twofold: 1) where does the problem come from? and 2) given the age of my device, is it worth repairing it?
Thank you in advance for your responses.

Hello,
I had this problem for several months already, at times I couldn't use this device (memory card error) so I took it in for repair. Darty initially estimated the repair at 200 euros, only to finally tell me that they could no longer obtain the parts. So since I had extended my warranty for 5 years, they provided me with a Canon IXUS 70 as a replacement.
So if your device is broken, it is now impossible to repair it.

I had the same problem as you a year ago, and the repair was covered by Canon even though it was no longer under warranty. By checking their website, I noticed that there were issues of this type with this device and that if this breakdown occurred
it was necessary to contact the customer service in your area, which I did, and there were no problems. I went back to the site and I no longer find this message, but you can always try sending an email to the "web self-service technical support of Canon" or call customer service.

Yes! And thank you, Jeremiah. It was by gently closing the case, with the card not fully in place and the device turned on, that the error message disappeared, and I was able to format the card... It works!

I've got an Ixus 400 camera and when I turn it on, the display on the screen isn't normal and the photos taken are unclear and blurry. This is new because it was in good condition before. What should I do? Thank you.

Hello, I have an IXUS 400 that I've had for almost 5 years and now there are horizontal interference (lines)
on the screen and on the photos taken (without flash it’s worse!!!)
A week ago, I had the same problem as the initial people (card error)
but the problem went away....
If you know about the interference
thank you.

Hello everyone
I confirm that the "memory card error" or "no memory card" issue, etc., on the IXUS 400 is indeed taken care of for free by CANON regardless of the purchase date of the device. I brought my device yesterday to Canon at 72/76 rue Surmelin PARIS 20, where it was accepted for repair "under warranty" even though I have had it for 5 years and bought it in Japan.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Hello,

Your advice to contact VILMA was very helpful,
Indeed, I sent my APS IXUS 400 to the address on rue du Surmelin and it came back to me without any costs to pay, my APS is still 5 years old!!!!!

Have a good day.

Good evening to all who have had the "memory card error" issue
You need to remove the front of the device and take out the small hidden button cell (well hidden), put it back in place and no more error... it's the illness of the ixus 400!
Good luck and don't forget to note the location of the screws, they are not all the same size....

I encountered the same memory card reading issue with my IXUS 400 (year 2004)
The local photographer and Fnac can't do anything... or the cost would exceed that of a new one!

But after research, CANON covers repairs (recurring issue with Ixus400)
Canon Lab S-Inter (Northern region): 73 rue Alfred Nobel 62880 Vendin le Vieil (near Lens) tel 03 21 79 13 00

Hello, in fact, this problem is recurring with all digital cameras: they all have a small button cell that saves the date and various personal settings, and it charges from the camera's battery. After a few years, this battery no longer charges, and it needs to be replaced, about 5 euros I think in the case of the Canon Ixus. You have to open the device, around 6 or 8 screws, and it can be found on the circuit board next to the lens, well hidden. It's very easy to replace as long as you have the right screwdrivers to open the device, be careful with the length of the screws. My Ixus is back in action after this replacement, when I thought I would have to throw it away. Good luck.

Salut, I would like to have a bit more details to extract this damn lithium battery 321 and AVOID REMOVING SCREWS WHERE I SHOULD NOT. The problem is there, but who knows?

I had the same issue as you, I formatted the card, changed the battery, nothing worked, then. Congratulations! I followed your advice. I unscrewed my camera, changed the small battery that is next to the lens (battery reference 614), and surprise! It works, thank you!

Hello, it’s certainly the small battery located inside the device next to the lens; it serves to store various data including the date and time. It is normally recharged by the large battery. After a few years, it no longer holds a charge and causes all sorts of errors, including "error 050" or memory card error. This battery can be found at tobacconists for about 5 euros. You need the right screwdrivers, be careful with the length of the screws, and about 10 minutes at most to get it back up and running.

Good luck and see you soon JC
