Samsung M3 Portable External Hard Drive Solved

Question

Hello, For the past two days, when I connect my hard drive to my computer, it appears on the taskbar, but when I look for it on my computer, I can't see it. Therefore, I can't access it to save the data inside. This problem started when I installed it on my computer. I tried it on another computer and it behaves the same way. Please help me. Welcome to the Forum, ThiernoBary :)  If I understand your message correctly, this external HDD has worked on your PC before and this is not its first connection. If I'm mistaken, please correct me :)  If you don’t see the HDD in Computer, it means that the OS (Windows) was unable to assign it a letter. For this reason, I suggest you go to Disk Management to see what’s going on and possibly try to manually assign it a letter: right-click on the external HDD > Change Drive Letter and Paths > Add to assign/change a letter to the HDD. If this step remains impossible, please let me know what information you see displayed (a screenshot would be welcome :) )  By the way, @ThiernoBary, can you hear the HDD spinning? Are there any unusual rotations or noises? Don’t forget to test another USB cable as well…  Does the HDD appear in Device Manager? It's worth checking this too.  As for the health status of the HDD, I would recommend checking its integrity using the HDD manufacturer's utility.  @ThiernoBary, does the HDD contain important data? Do you have a backup of it? I ask because if we decide, based on the results of the checks and tests you perform, to format the HDD, the contents stored on it will be gone forever. To answer your questions; 1) The external hard drive has worked and this is not its first connection to my computer. When it is connected, it runs normally.  2) It appears in the device manager. Attached are three screenshots 3) I don’t have a lot of data inside, formatting it is not a problem for me. So my question is the following: you told me that the Windows OS could not assign it a letter. You suggested that I go to the disk manager. How do we access the disk manager? Please provide the full path.

Hello ThiernoBary :)  If you hear the external hard drive spinning and it appears in "Devices and Printers," I would encourage you to try a "Troubleshoot" (right-click on the external hard drive). This action will not delete any information on the hard drive and will not cause any harm.  To access Device Manager: simultaneously press the Windows+R keys > type devmgmt.msc > Enter will allow you to access the Device Manager category. Each line is preceded by a plus (+). Look for your external hard drive among the drives that are displayed there. It may appear as "Unknown Device" > right-click on this drive > click on Uninstall > disconnect the drive from the USB port > turn off/restart the PC (not just a simple reboot, but unplug the power supply from the PC, then plug the power back in and start the PC) > then reconnect the drive. After this action, do you notice any changes?  It would be good to see how the hard drive appears in Disk Management. To get there, simultaneously press the Windows+R keys > type diskmgmt.msc > Enter. Hello Mr. Sannin -WD Thank you for your efforts I just performed the action you just explained to me, but it doesn't work. When I open the Disk Management, I find it at the bottom. In the first column, it says: Disk 1 Basic 931.51 GB Online and in the next column in front, it says: 931.51 GB Unallocated. Thank you for the information, ThiernoBary :) The screenshot says a lot... Modifying or adding a letter to this drive wouldn't be possible.  I refer back to your previous message where you told me that formatting (or the loss of data stored on this HDD) doesn't pose any problem for you... If that’s the case, I would suggest right-clicking on this HDD (on the "unallocated" space) to see what options are available in the dropdown menu. If using "New Simple Volume" is possible, I suggest you proceed with it. If that's not possible, please let me know what the options are :)  @ThiernoBary, I strongly recommend running diagnostics on the HDD (via the manufacturer's HDD utility or through alternative tools) to check its health status and verify its integrity. I must admit that the behavior of this HDD doesn't seem like a good sign to me... Good evening Mr. Sannin -WD Thank you for your efforts, the problem is resolved with your last advice As soon as I right-clicked on Unallocated, I continued with New, I managed to assign a letter to it and it worked.
