Hello
I've had msmoney99 since ...1999. I was able to upgrade from Windows 3.1 to Windows 8 without any problems.
I just switched to Windows 10.
And there, it's almost successful on the first try!
The only issue is that I no longer have access to the functions in the menu bar (file, edit, go to, favorites, tools ..) so I can't search anymore.
I've tried switching to Money 2005 but I can't retrieve my file.
If anyone has an idea, I'm all ears.
Thanks in advance

Hello kedo31;
Have you tried making the necessary Windows 10 registry modification to make Money compatible with Win10? If not: See this link
Please return to the Forum to let us know if it worked or not afterwards

Hello jmarion3
Yes, I made the change. It hasn't changed anything ... but I didn't have any internet issues at all.
Money works well for adding, deleting, balancing accounts ... but not for opening a new file, not for doing searches ...
It's "just" the toolbar that crashes the software. -
Hello;
1-Have you, after making a proper backup, tried to completely uninstall and clean Money, restart the machine, and do a reinstall?
2-Have you tried to install the latest version of MsMoney 2005 which is supposedly (subject to confirmation) compatible with the old version, but you couldn't open your backup >> Did you get an error message and if so, what was it?
A+

Nice to help!
-1: Yes, I have uninstalled and reinstalled it several times.
-2: I installed Money 2005 on Windows 10, no message, but the software crashes, closing and returning to a blank file. The backup copy is renamed to .nm7 but nothing more.
I attempted to install Money on Windows 7 and recover my Money 99 file. And there I got a message: file missing or read-only... I tried the different manipulations proposed by Microsoft, but I couldn't open anything. -
Hello;
1-As mentioned above, Money99 works on Windows 10 by modifying the correct registry line depending on whether Win10 is 32 or 64 bits >> See this link
2-I am also "almost" certain that MsMoney 2005 is compatible with the older version 99, but it may be that this older version was uninstalled incorrectly or ??
On which medium did you make your backup(s)?
3-Are you sure you are properly uninstalling Money because you need to do so by following the instructions below
1-Make sure the last backup is up to date and valid: If that is the case, you need to make a copy of this backup on a removable medium (USB stick-CD/RW or External HDD)
2-Completely uninstall MsMoney using Revo Uninstaller, which can be downloaded from the link below
https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/utilitaires/19405-revo-uninstaller/
Launch this tool, search for Microsoft MsMoney, and uninstall it
3-Open hidden files in Windows / If problems >> See the link below
http://www.chantal11.com/2009/04/afficher-les-fichiers-caches-systeme-windows-7-vista/
then navigate to C:\User(UserName)\AppData\local\Microsoft >> Look for Money and delete it
4-Open the registry using the command Regedit (by clicking on the Windows icon at the bottom left and typing regedit and opening it (see at the top of the window))
Open the Hkey_Current_User key, then look for Software >> Microsoft >> Money >> Delete
Open the Hkey_Local_Machine key and do the same operation (If Money is present)
5-Restart the machine
6-Reinstall MsMoney 2005 using the update patch (or reinstallation) available at the link below
https://www.commentcamarche.net/telecharger/bureautique/15561-microsoft-money-2005/
then carry out the installation according to the procedure in the link
(The installation of the patch must be done in Windows XP compatibility mode)
7-Launch MsMoney from the backup made in 1- and everything should be back to normal
For security reasons >> Always make a backup of MsMoney on a removable medium (External hard drive - USB stick or CD/RW)
You need to configure your backup by following the model of the screenshots from the patch download link according to the backup destination (Example made for a backup on CD/RW)
See you later

Hello
1- I have the right information in the records.
Money 99 works on win10 except for the menu bar, which is a hassle.
2- I just cleaned everything up, reinstalled everything...
I opened sample.mny and made the updates.
Still no option to recover my Money 99 data.
Thank you
kedo31 -
I forgot to mention that money2005 closes by saying: has stopped working... and restarts with the sample file.
-
Hello kedo31;
1- After reinstalling MsMoney 2005, you mentioned that it opens and closes when you launch it >> Does this happen every time? Sometimes this occurs during installation and then stabilizes afterwards.
2- When it launches "correctly," do you have full access to the software with its toolbar active?
3- The Sample file is an example file created by Microsoft and should be replaced by your backup file, provided that it is valid.
4- Do you have only one backup? Have you tried relaunching MsMoney with an older backup? On what medium is your backup located (USB stick or other)?
See you later
Sincerely

Hello Jmarion3
And thanks again for all the effort you’re putting in!
Response point by point:
1- Msmoney 2005 works perfectly with all the files (the new ones I create) but crashes consistently with the money 99 files.
2- When it launches correctly: I have access to everything for money 2005. However, there is no toolbar for money 99.
3- I can't replace the sample file since my backup causes money 2005 to crash.
4- I have tried with lots of different backups... on a USB stick, and even by changing computers (so double cleaning, one running on win7 and the other on win10).
To wrap up: I’ve started exporting my accounts from money 99 and importing them into money 2005... I'm retrieving the entries, but for now, since I haven't imported all my accounts, I don't have a clear idea of the results.
See you! -
Hello kedo31 ;
No worries for "the harm that ...."
1-What surprises me a bit is that Money 99 works (or used to work) in principle with Windows 10 since I've done it before and I shared a link above to confirm this
2-You mentioned having 2 machines, one with Windows 7 >> Question: Can you use Money 99 with its updated backup on Windows 7? >> If yes, in my opinion, if the problem is simply an incompatibility between this version of Money 99 and Windows 10, the solution would be to keep Money 99 on your Windows 7 for your archives and install MsMoney 2005 on the Windows 10 machine and for example, use MsMoney 2005 starting today or from January 1, 2016, by entering your latest balances for each account and continue.... >> Please confirm these points if possible
3-Where does this version of Money 99 come from? Is it part of a Microsoft suite like Works or others...?
This morning I have to go out and will be back around 1 PM and available afterwards to continue without any problem

hello
1- what's strange is that it works "almost"
2- yes, I could use money on my other computer but it's a laptop without a battery... not very practical.
3 - money99 actually comes from the Microsoft Works suite
Have a nice day
there's no rush for a response: I don't do my accounts every day!!! but I don't like not understanding-
Hello kedo31;
Unless I’m mistaken and I thought about this earlier, I believe the issue comes from the fact that this version of Money99 is as mentioned above included in a Works suite which might still be installed on your machine or perhaps poorly uninstalled, hence the conflict.
I’ve seen this problem before but on Windows 7 or 8?? and I need to search through my archives to verify all of this.
As mentioned above, if the issue really arises from an incompatibility of Money99 (Works), your laptop would actually only serve as an archive for your previous accounting if you continue on Windows 10 + MsMoney 2005.
I really have to leave now, so see you this afternoon.
Best regards.

Well, I've never used Works Suite.. it was sold with a computer a long time ago.
The computers I work on are recent (well, not too old), and Works Suite has never been installed on them.
It's quite possible that my version of Money99 is weird.. -
Hello,
I am using this version (without any modification) on w7, w8.1, and w10.
I "stupidly" installed it from the CD and restored my accounts from a backup on a USB stick.

Hello nemerod18 ;
It would be very interesting for you to confirm whether you indeed have the Works suite, including Money 99 on CD, and as you seem to confirm, you have reinstalled this suite on Windows 10 without any issues for Money 99 and then retrieved your old backups without any problem??? Because if you personally have done this installation and everything is fine, why is kedo31 unable to achieve the same result with a machine running Windows 10??
-
-
Hello
I also install "stupidly" from the CD.
It has always worked well until now, and this damn toolbar that is unavailable.
It might be due to my computer's configuration. I should test it on another Win10 computer, with my Money CD and my backups: but I don't have any other computers on hand.-
Hello kedos31;
While waiting for a response from nemrod18, who claims to have reinstalled the Works suite including Money99 (abandoned since 2006) on Windows 10, we will wait for his valuable advice before proceeding, as it all seems surprising that he could do what you cannot do with exactly the same software and systems today.
If it doesn't work on your machine, I don't see why it would work on another Windows 10 machine - Works and Money99?? >> All this to say that the problem does not come from your Windows 10!
Regards

I have a new update: I configured MSMoney99 to run in XP compatibility mode... and now it's asking me to insert a disc in drive E: (CD drive from which I reinstalled MSMoney99). After clicking cancel twice (because the window opens twice), MSMoney99 opens with my accounts... and my menu bar is active....
-
Hello kedo31;
Indeed, the compatibility mode helps to resolve certain issues (I mentioned this in the patch installation that I uploaded on CCM, but someone deleted that line. I trusted that person, but I will correct it right away) (Done today) >> So Money 99 should be installed now >> To confirm, and if so, have you tried to restart from your last backup?
See you!

Great progress: I just managed to remove access to the external drive.
I only have the "User Account Control" window left asking for my permission to launch ms money. -
I spoke too quickly (I had left the CD in the drive). So 3 windows open:
- the first: user control
- the other 2: access request for the drive.
Once I validated everything, Money works perfectly even if I uncheck compatibility mode.
Now I'm honestly having a hard time understanding!-
I don't really understand your comments!
I suggest you try the following, but unfortunately, I don't have the installation CD for Works including Money99
1- From what I think and have read somewhere, we should be able to install only Money from the installation CD of the Works suite, and if this is indeed the case, you can only see it >> You insert the Works CD >> You open it and check if it is possible to install only Money and if so, you follow the instructions below
2/1- Start the installation of Money99 in XP compatibility mode, but on the condition that there are no traces of previous installations?? and let the machine do its thing
2/2- If there are still problems >> You can send me a PM from the private messaging of CCM (See this link)
see you+

Hello jmarion3
I'm sorry for not being clear.
I solved the problem, but I don't exactly know how (well, what makes it work compared to yesterday)
Here’s what I did in order since this morning:
- completely uninstalled msmoney99
- cleaned my registries ..
- reinstalled msmoney99 from the cd (works suite, but only installing msmoney99).
As nothing had changed (my toolbar still didn't work), I checked the XP compatibility box, and I launched the setup of money (from my hard drive).
From there, Money99 was working perfectly well, except that it asked me for the installation CD (if you chose to ignore it, msmoney99 would still launch)
I changed the compatibility modes XP, Win7, Win8: everything was the same!
I tested by unchecking the compatibility modes (so win10). Everything worked except the request for the installation cd, and the user account confirmation. Go figure! (Does checking the compatibility mode and then unchecked it change something?)
I got fed up: I turned everything off, and turned it back on.
Miracle: the request for cd access disappeared.
I just changed the user rights...
EVERYTHING WORKS! But I don't know why
Thank you very much for your help; it feels good! I felt supported.

Hello kedo31 ;
You did great and thank you for responding and I'm especially happy for you if everything is working now
I think the issues were multiple (bad uninstallation, reinstallation, etc...)
The solution was indeed to install only from the Money CD (already written and done above) but all of this is not obvious from a distance
I am also almost convinced that the MsMoney 2005 version was installed in its place but if Money99 works for you, that's fine
In any case, I'm glad I could help you
I'm marking the topic as resolved now and I wish you lots of money (the real one and don't forget to back up regularly
Best regards
